The good, the bad and the ugly. WIP/opn.
The good. +Gameplay feels good. Mix of rpg, shooter, stealth, some fps-melee and driving. Enjoyable. +The world/setting. Night city is a marvel even when driving the same road over and over jumping between 2 quest chains. +Characters, acting and early game stories. The first act of this game is great. Really puts you in the shiz. The characters and their actors really sell it too. +Graphical fidelity/visuals. Probably the best overall looking game I have played. The bad. -Bugs. Most bug can be fixed with a save/load every now and then. Crashed once in 50+ hours. There are a few bugs that I haven't found fixes for like perks or implants not working. Hopefully these get fixed soon as they cripple some play styles. -Narrative, marketting, Act 3 and player choice/agency. Bugs can probably be fixed but imo the real problem is how this game was often sold as a experience that gave weight to player choice. Or at least gave players hard choices. So much so that the devs repeated "You can't save the world, you can only save yourself." as a design philosophy for writing in the genre. ((Going to be slightly spoilerish from this point on, nothing that would ruin the plot. Skip2TLDR)) The problem is that the entire final Act of the game pigeon holes the player into either choosing to eat a bullet, on your own terms, or following a number of roads to ruin. All ending in events that despite the illusion of choice, have nothing to do with what the player wants or worked for. Player choice based changes are skin deep. (6afaik) TLDR: The writing does not payoff the players agency within the first 2 Acts nor does it offer a real choice at the conclusion of the journey. -In slight addition to the previous point, but also somewhat its own issue, choice payoff. There are a few good examples of a choice meaning something down the road, but most don't seem to effect anything. -Continuity. Also related to the final Act, a few important details are just not explained well. Thx.
