Cute, but...
Camp mechanics are not really enjoyable, considering you have to spend too much time there doing chores. Stopped being fun after a couple of hours.
Fights are not bad, but again, some weapons are not great, and some mechanics are not good. Like you unlock new gears/spells that are better, but "bad/lacking" previous gears/spells/cards that are now "meeeh"are still in the random pool.
Lots of items are lacklusters you don't enjoy playing.
And you have to finish 4 runs in each of the 4 worlds, that 2 TIMES to finish the game? Every run looks like the previous one. No different mechanics beween worlds.
So meh, I played it, but it could have been better. Time spent on it is more and more obvious.
Extremely fun little base builder game with rogue-like elements for "dungeons" and combat. Whilst you can be a good god, it's way more fun to be an evil god and cause terror on your cutesy followers, who will worship you no matter what. I just wish the animations were a little bit more gruesome sometimes, just for the fun of it LOL.
Real criticisms I have for the game though:
Managing the cult can be a bit of a chore sometimes, specially since the time cycle goes too fast in my opinion. But that's only sometimes and it is still fun to do most of the time.
At one point the game *forces* you to lose basically all your money in a scripted event and doesn't give it back to you anymore. Not a super duper big deal, because at that point in the game money wouldn't be a concern anymore, but still a bit frustrating to see all the money you earned simply disappear because of something you can't control.
That's it, everything else is great.
Also, I've been playing on Linux, and aside from some heavy stuttering for like a minute whenever a I boot the game, it runs perfectly afterwards. Using Proton 8 , as proton 9 is broken. It did crash on me once, ironically it was during the credits. No other bugs occurred in my experience.
Solid 4.5/5
I have not 100% the game but I have put well around a 100 hours in it. This game had me addicted from day to night. It is that good. I appreciate eveerything about this game; the art, music, gameplay, ambience, atmosphere and every single detail and love that had been poured into it. Every single penny spent was worth it for me.
Please try it.
Also I would like to add that in the current version of the game, they have removed the DRMs as I tried playing it offline when I first boot it up, smoothly finished talking with the one who waits, and was able to continue playing the game no problem without any internet connection so cheers.
As the title says - i got hooked on it from the first moment, every time i boot it up, i just cannot pull myself from it.
Some may say that the cult management aspect is boring, but honestly it's exactly what i missed in most rogue-like games. A base to come back to and develop.
The artstyle is just a perfect combination of cuteness and disturbing stuff.
The soundtrack is a masterpiece.
Fighting mechanics are pretty simple, but really smooth and rewarding.
Basically, Cult of the Lamb takes a lot of already well-known mechanics from other games, combines them, and does it very well.
The art style is adorable, but that doesn't compensate for the weaknesses.
The core gameplay is a very shallow hack & slash which additionally suffers from performance and precision issues. Not much changes from the beginning to the end of the game, except your chances of getting a weapon you don't want. It's pleasant for a while, nothing more.
The settlement part is, I'm sorry to say, an irredeemable, pointless bore. After 10 missions you'll dread going back to do your chores. It's incredibly repetitive. There's no management: no tough decisions. It's just buttons you have to press to get stuff. If you remember facebook web games back in 2014, that's a good summary of what the settlement part of the game is.
Considering Hades, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and another dozen similar games have virtually infinite replayability, this game just isn't worth playing.
