Good graphical update while maintaining art style. With option to switch to old graphics. Modernized controls, with the old movement still optional using the d pad on a controller. No nonsense clean remaster.
Personally I think its worth the price. The graphical overhaul and improved controls, with it running well on modern hardware makes this great to relive your childhood or have your kids experience the greats of old.
While I appreciate the effort put into this remaster, I have a few problems with it.
1. Absolutely no k+m support
2. No FOV slider
Croc is an amazing game and this remaster contains really nice graphics, plus I love how the game looks in retro mode with CRT filter. Fabulous!!
However, it really sucks that this game is gamepad-only and that we cannot adjust the FOV.
Croc Remastered is legitimately one of my go-to examples of a modern console remaster/port. A classic PSone game for newer consoles and hardware, capturing what we love about the original and creatingthe DEFINITIVE way to play this game, without question.
The opening Argonaut screen with the gobbos on the TV screen, the hybrid console scheme between classic tank and full analog, the single button graphics toggle and resolution options, the PACKED TO THE BRIM Crocipedia, complete with scans of the Japanese strategy guide... this is insane.
The dynamic soundtrack and faster load times make enjoying the atmosphere of this game EVEN EASIER with less breaks in my play time. Literally, the only loading screen is as the game loads, it is SO FAST! And the old password system works too?!
Knowing the ONLY bug I have run into so far is something Argonaut Games have been made aware of is incredibly comforting, given their approach to polish and refine the game before committing to launch. I imagine the mace hit-boxes will be fixed before too long, so aside from a single screen I needed to damage boost through to survive, it has been a flawless experience.
Having the DOS version as a purchase bonus is just the icing on the cake for game preservation.
I loved to play this game as a child and I was so excited when I saw that there's gonna be a remaster.
It was not a question that I'd buy it as soon as it released and i don't regret it.
The music and the sound effects bring back so many fond memories.
When I was a little kid I didn't finish the game I just had fun. This time I'm definitely going to complete this masterpiece 100%.
The remaster part: I think they did a very good job with it. The graphics are great, lots of customization imo - for example you can put a CRT or VGA "filter" on the screen to get a good retro effect. You can even set the models to have the older look. I'm using the fully remastered setting and the game looks great in 4k.
If you played this game back in the days and liked it: Buy it, it's worth it.
If you don't know this game at all and like platformers: It's the best time to buy this game :D
I am a big fan of the original game and the sequel, so my anticipation for the remaster was high. It paid off, as this makes the original game look even better.
The new 3D control scheme makes the game much more playable for modern standards (albeit, you'll likely need a controller for that experience because I can only get the original tank controls to work on my keyboard), and the enhanced graphics remain faithful to the original game. The development team behind the port did their work and well, did it very nicely.
The fact that Argonaut also included lots of history in regards to the development of the game including interviews from their staff and other informative material through the Crocipedia makes for a title that feels a bit like the Digital Eclipse Gold Master Series, where it's both a game and a documentary, but more of a game this time around.
Some people may be turned off by the high price, considering this is just a simple remaster of a PS1/Saturn game with little additions, but for me, this was all I was asking for. If you love the original, then you'll love this remaster.
