I was really looking forward to this one, because it looked like FTL meets Mad Max to me. What's not to love?
Well, as cool as the premise is, for me, the execution is somewhat lackluster.
When I started to play, the first thing that caught my attention was how it looks and feels.
For me, it somewhat tried to mimic FTL in graphic design as well as sound, esp. with the atmospheric music. But it is simlpy not as well done on a technical level. Somehow the look of it feels somewhat unpolished to me, like a very complex flash game... That being said, the look wasn't FTLs strongest suit, so the mimicing of that style seems odd to me. But how FTL managed to create an atmosphere of urgency and isolation at the same time, mainly through its music, was amazing, and here, convoy fails once more. The tunes aren't as memorable or as iconic, and with their laid back tone, they don't match the frantic action in combat.
Which brings us to the gameplay. It is broken up basically in exploration with the concoy itself on a world map, and random combat encounters, exactly like FTL...and like FTL, the combat is real-time, but can be paused every time. But it feels somewhat clunky, and seems not really deep. You have support units that shoot, you have your convoy that must be protected, that's about it, everything off course can be updated with better equipment, but somehow not with equipment that really adds to the gameplay and the level of strategics you can apply to any given situation. All in all, it feels very shallow compared to the thing it is trying to be. There are a few jokes and weird references here and there with sidequests, like seems to be the standard with this kind of game these days.
All this being said- I do NOT entirely dislike the game. It is playable, in short bursts even a bit enjoyable, it just feels like a less-polished, badly made and entirely lesser version of a game that is already there. So why bother with this one?
