The First Text Adventure I Ever Played
I was doing a programming course back in 1984 and we were linked to the nearby University. Colossal Cave was available and I spent most of my time playing this instead of doing my programming tutorials and tasks. Although fiendishly difficult and brutal, for example, you can mess up a task early on in the game that will cause you to not be able to complete the game further down the track, I was hooked. I do love these adventures, making up the maps and writing down all the discoveries, tips and tricks found along the way. This version has a map maker to help you out and keep track of locations and paths. The text parser was quite primitive and frustrating at times but caused you to think laterally and come up with alternative dialog. I never completed the game as I refused to look up walkthroughs. The graphical interpretation provides an alternative view compared to the images conjured up in your head as you read through the text descriptions of your current location. It is like watching a movie after you have read the book. If you like this genre, then have a look. Also, don't be afraid to look up some tips and hints, otherwise you will be like me and still have not completed it 40 years later !!
