ABOUT

Having its roots in 1997 and developed in Ukraine, Chasm: The Rift is one of the most thrilling and innovative FPS from this era and the first Eastern European boomer shooter ever made.

THE STORY

Feeling you are no longer alone, you turn, with just enough time to shoot, killing the mutation charging mercilessly toward you. You begin to sense an eerie feeling of fear in the air, but your skin crawls as you realize it's your own...What was that thing?

Again and again you shoot, battling more strange beasts; all grotesque mutations of creatures you once knew. Suddenly the inexplicable becomes clear. Time channels have formed in the Earth's atmosphere, turning once normal life forms into something they were never meant to be. As part of a special commando unit, you must not only ward off and eradicate the beasts, but destroy the time channels to finally rid the Earth of these deadly mutations.

GAMEPLAY

Along with a heart-pounding adventure through the Corridors of Time and the satisfaction of ripping limbs from hideous monsters with the iconic BladeGun, and an innovative weather system, the player will now be able to enjoy this late 90’s FPS classic with the comfort of modern PCs, now with full 4K support, improved sound design, achievements, and localised into twelve languages.

Atmospheric, imaginative Quake-clone

I loved this game (and specifically the demo) because the intro, with its rain and fluttering papers, and played it over and over back in the day. I could never find the full game in shops, and later attempts at installing cracked versions failed...until now. Its unashamedly an attempt at a Quake Killer, and does feel a little bit like a stepping stone between Quake and Unreal. It doesn't come close to challenging the poetry of Quake's game mechanics, but for tension, grim ambience and creatively detailed environments, it delivers. If you like dark 90s FPS and accept it for what it is, Chasm is terrific. If it launches in a window, you can just toggle the display setting to your resolution and full-screen...no problems. Roll on mid-October when (I think?) the full version should drop.

Retro action nostalgia

If you're a fan of Doom / Quake and so on, you'd probably like this one as well. Nothing more to be said really

!Do NOT buy this Remaster!

This is my review for the Chasm: The Rift game. Before buying the game, I advise you to read the next article "The remake of the Ukrainian shooter Chasm: The Rift turned out to be not a Ukrainian game at all" (Google the name of it), and information about game Developers - Action Forms (Ukrainian Company that made original Chasm The Rift - 1997) on Wikipedia, Ukrainian version - if need - translate it, because the English version is too clean of interesting details to understand why you should not buy the remaster that is available in Gog store (or other digital stores), but rather play its completely free legal version, which can be found on the Internet. I won't publish any links, because mad Gog moderators and some of their puppets will run in and delete everything they see like they did a lot of times.

Emulates Quake 1 like very nicely

When iD software moved from GT Interactive to Activision as their publisher, GT tried to make a quake-like game through action forms and succeeded in making a sleeper hit. It wasn't as popular as Quake but it certainly was affordable at the time for those not wanting to pay 50 dollars in 1996/1997. The Game as I remember it was DOS-based which was the style of quake as well. I was hoping this game to come to the store.

Fails to launch

You click play. it doesn't start. it doesn't 'start and then crashes', it just 'does nothing'. no amount of fiddling has gotten me closer to playing this game that I've always had my eye on. very disappointing.
