Slaps Harder Than Existential Dread
Let me tell you a tale. A tale of swords, sorcery, airships, and deeply relatable anthropomorphic lion-men who deliver side quests and sarcasm in equal measure. That’s right, I’ve been playing Chained Echoes, and it’s as if someone threw classic Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and a spicy webcomic into a blender, hit ‘puree’, and poured out a pixelated cocktail of emotional trauma and top-tier gameplay. At first, I thought this was going to be another charming indie RPG where you save the world with the power of friendship and improbable hair physics. Boy, was I wrong. This game hands you a bouquet of flowers one moment, and then smacks you with the funeral card the next. It’s like the writers woke up and chose emotional violence. Let’s talk about the furries. And no, not in the “look what the internet dragged in” way. These anthropomorphic NPCs are legit. They’re warriors, shopkeepers, sages—basically full-time employees of Emotional Damage Inc. One lion-looking guy gave me a mission to retrieve a relic and then casually dropped a line about how his entire tribe was slaughtered in the war. Sir. I just wanted to know where the inn was. I came for the 16-bit nostalgia, and I stayed because a fox-man monk told me to embrace the chaos of war while petting a squirrel. Also, there’s a bear who runs a library. A bear. Who. Runs. A. Library. If you don’t think that’s the pinnacle of game design, you’re playing the wrong genre, my friend. The combat? Crispier than a chicken wing left in the fryer five seconds too long. Turn-based but snappy. Strategic but not in the "let me spend an hour min-maxing" way. Every fight feels like a tactical slapfight between drama students on Red Bull. And don’t get me started on the mech battles. They straight-up let you pilot Gundam suits like it’s casual Tuesday, and you’re late for your giant-robot Pilates class. Oh, and the humor? Imagine Monty Python got locked in a dungeon with Edgar Allan Poe and they wrote dialogue together while

An absolute gem...
First of all: I have to admit that games nowadays can't really drag me into a deep state of immersion anymore. Of course this might be because I am getting older (turning 40 soon), but I have another theory: The hyperrealistic graphics, localisation of everything and as few text as possible are ruining my imagination. There are hardly any spots left in which you have to add some of your own fantasy. But this game right here seems to pull me back into my childhood / teenager years. I bought this game and instantly played for about five constant hours straight. I can't remember which game in the past ten years hooked me like that - except maybe for the Witcher series. Some people might dislike this, but this game is really old fashioned. I see this as a huge plus. My Pros: - Amazing story: So many pieces are being put together in such a nice way. The characters are all lovable so far and I am really excited to get through the whole plot. - Very simple gameplay: Don't misunderstand me, the fights can be quite demanding. But there are not hundreds of different functions you have to learn - like in RD2 or many modern jRPGs for example. There is a simple menu movement, only a few buttons you have to use and there is no way you forget how to play this game. - Fights: I love the fighting system. Very simple but in a challenging way. It's simply fun and - in my opinion - just as it should be in a jRPG. - Music: Beautiful music, very well composed. - You have huge powersuits - I am really looking forward how they will be implemented in the further game. My Cons: - It COULD be a little bit more for adults. While I am still in the beginning of the game, it sometimes feels that the game can't really decide who the target group is. But this is a very small contra point. All in all, I am very thankful to have the pleasure to play a gem like this again. Thank you, Matthias Linda!

Ill-Advised Battle & Leveling Systems
This game FORCES you to play by its own rules... If a boss (or random encounter) is too tough for, TOO BAD! (And some of the random encounters last as long as some of the boss fights!) You DON'T EARN EXP, so you can't grind levels to solve your problems. You still earn SP (Skill Points) for upgrading skills...like, 3 SP per battle for skills that require 300 SP OR MORE to upgrade, and the skill upgrades aren't even significant (a damage improvement from 1.2x to 1.4x, for example...) Your characters' stats depend SOLELY on your equipment and whatever passive skills you've unlocked and equipped. You only get one upgrade after a boss fight, and you have to choose between a Combat Skill, Passive Skill, or Stat Upgrade...and if you choose the wrong upgrade for that point in the game, you're put out unless you have an earlier save! The leveling system is VERY linear, just like the progression of the rest of the game. The Overdrive/Overheat Gauge in battle is A NUISANCE; long story short, either choose the attack options the game tells you to, or you get stat penalties that will be the deciding factor whether you win or lose or not, and the skills the game highlights for you are often ones you don't NEED at the moment in time, like healing when you're already at full HP, or a buff you've already used! Sienna (the bandit/ninja woman) is strong enough to wield a katana, but she gets one-shotted by most random enemies after awhile, because she can't equip the heavier armor that the rest of the characters can; even the dainty princess and the elderly man have a heavier armor class than her! The plot might be interesting, but the game's difficulty is REALLY keeping me from enjoying it. Twelve hours into the game, I still have yet to pilot one of the mechs again. I'd rather just go back to playing the SNES and PSX RPGs that this game was clearly trying to ape.
