Intense, gritty and unforgiving, Call of Juarez paves a trail through bloodshed, leaving death and smoking guns in its wake.
There was a time when the Wild West was just dangerous. Now it's downright deadly.
Features:
Play as Reverend Ray and Billy Candle, each with unique skills, abilities, weapons and contrasting styles.
I really enjoyed this game while it was working. The big problem is drawing your weapon in duels. There's only a handful of duels though so it's no TOO bad. The instructions don't work no matter what your mouse settings are. Someone found the solution, alt-tab out and alt-tab back in but you have to time it to the countdown and it's pretty difficult but it works. If this can get fixed, I will give it 5 stars.
I really, really wanted to like this game. I read reviews, watched videos, informed myself before purchasing. And then I tried it. It was a bit clunky, as some people have described it at first. But then the clunkiness got in the way of my ability to complete early tasks (like getting away from town in the first chapter, or stealing ammo from crazy whatsisname in the next task). The tasks were difficult, yes, but the clunky controls and subpar collision detection made it a crapshoot as to whether I could jump out of crazy whatsisname's window in time before he shot and killed me.
I like hard games. But I like them when they're hard because they were made that way, not so much when they become hard because they're poorly made. One day, maybe I'll revisit this, but I doubt it.
Positives:
+ Big "open" worlds
+ Nice graphics (in dx10 version)
+ Nice sound and music
+ Nice atmosphere
+ Some cool episodes
+ Some beautiful landscapes
+ Different things to do: shooting, stealthing, chasing, climbing, horse riding etc)
+ Okay cinematics and story
+ You play two different characters
Negatives:
- Some of the episodes are not that great
- The gunplay are so so
- Some bugs and errors
- Large landscapes but surprisingly linear and narrow at places
- Some bad level designs
- Not everything is as fun to do, and some pars are quite boring
- The whip
Total Score: 6.5/10
After 14 hopurs I finally beat it, honestly I expected it to be shorter and for the most part I had fun
The good:
1. Ray`s voice actor. Ray may be nuts, but sometimes he's so passionate, I love it
2. The bow, basically a 1 shot kill weapon, once I got it I never used another weapon with Billy
3. A lenghty campaign
4. The graphics are nice for its time
5. Y'll never run out of ammo
6. The last mission was great, a wholesome bulletstorm, too bad I couldn't try it on hard, but I died a couple of times on normal, so it's ok
The bad:
1. Some maps feel unneccesarily big, like in the rabbit hunting mission
2. The stealth mechanics are vague and can take a while to get used to
3. I couldn't get past the part where you have to run out of town in hard mode and had to restart the game in normal
4. The very last sequence of the game is a duel, but the game itself doesn't make it clear so I had to google the answer to what I thought was a bug
5. It's filled with little sequences where it is easy to fail and you require a lot of trial and error, but it's not too bad, except when there's an unskippable cutscene right before said sequences
Overall a good game, despite its flaws I still recommend it
My game kept crashing, either on DX9 or DX10. Running the DX10 version on compatibility mode set to Windows XP service pack 2 did the trick ( My OS is Windows 10 with the latest update as of 09/17/21) Some people will be instantly turned off by this. The game takes an unusual time to load for a game from 2006, taking into consideration my setup is relatively modern and loads any other games just fine. Patches or info is ancient and hard to find on the internet, I was hoping the sequels would be easier to use but on my search for solutions I found out that gunslinger and blood also have their own issues. Hopefully those will be a minute minority of cases.
