A passable corridor shooter
I played Hell's Highway when it came out so I decided to try this one. It's actually okay at the squad commanding -- they managed to successfully idiot proof the NPC followers you have. The problem is the level design does not foster the mechanics created for the game. All the levels are very linear and there is pretty much zero flexibility on where to go which stymies any interesting tactics. All the enemies are also scripted and never do anything interesting like try and flank you back. The guns that seem to draw complaints are not so much inaccurate as the enemies actually invincible unless certain criteria are met (distance, angle, cover)... you can tell this because you have no issue dropping people as long as they are not behind cover but if they are too far they are just invincible unless you are using the sniper rifle (then magically none of this applies except to the sandbagged MGs). I don't really find this to be too annoying given the emphasis on flanking, but I can see how this could take people out of it. Last, the story is mediocre save for the fact they took historical documents to piece together the level. There is one extra that literally shows the path you have to trace to complete a level which I found pretty neat. These unlocks are honestly the most interesting portion of the game, but some of them are locked behind the highest difficulty level and like hell am I playing this on anything higher than normal. As for the actual dialog, there needed to be more conversation. There might be monologues at the start of every mission, but there is nothing DURING the mission ever. Sum up all the flaws and it's still passable overall I'd say. I had an itch for a WW2 shooter and it scratched it well enough. MoH:AA did not.
