A hilarious and unique take on the open world survival genre. The standard mode at the moment only take a couple hours to complete, but it looks like there are plans for a whole lot more. If the rest of the game is as fun as this little teaser, I can see sinking a ton of time into the fun space adventure. Highly recommend trying it out, you'll be hooked!
Get this game. There's only one chapter so far, but soon two more modes will be added along with more chapters. It's about time GoG got a decent survival game similar to Subnautica. And the best part is it's an Unreal Engine game, so you won't have all the performance issues of the Unity engine or getting screwed when the developers decided to update their game to a new version of Unity and you're games borked (ala Sunless Sea.).
At this moment the game is a great 15 buck investment.
This is like Subntautica in space and it's clearly inspired by that game and takes most of it's key mechanics directly from it. Subntautica is a great game, and this does a decent job at imitating it's core gameplay. However, unlike Subnautica, Breathedge's pacing is really broken and it is very badly balanced and doesn't respect the player's time. In fact I would recommend to play it with a cheat table that lets you disable crafting requirements and when the constant monotonous back and forth really gets on your nerves, just toggle the cheat. Makes the filler a lot more tolerable.
On the positive side, it's really funny if you are into trashy reddit memes kind of humour, and the devs really excell at environmental storytelling. The constant commentary of your AI companion makes it even more fun to inspect different locations. This is something Subnautica didn't have, which I quite appreciate. The plot is just a setting for jokes and social commentary, but with the great environmental storytelling, it actually does become interesting at times.
Additionally, this game is very well optimized, doesn't crash and I saw very few bugs. At least at this time (it's been a while since release).
Overall Breathedge is a good game and given that this is the studio's very first game and it's already this good, I am excited to see what they do next.
...For me, and maybe a few others, it's a rare, 5/5, gem of a game.
There is a certain crowd that needs "something mindblowing to happen" every few hours in a game, I think, or else they will quit, give a harsh critique and never go back to it.
For some, anyhow, at least for me, it is a perfect, relaxing sci-fi game.
I can easily lose a few hours with Breathedge and feel happy for playing it.
I'm sure there is a bunch of plot to develop, and key items to find, and build necessary things to get forward... And eventually I'd like to finish it... I mean there is a sequel in the making already, so the story continues.
But there is just a rare thing in a game that does so many things in their own way quite perfectly, even if they do a few things "wrong".
So if you need a game to have convoluted plot, with 25 endings, lots of interesting characters, lots of sidequests etc. this is not for you.
But this is a game for those who want to experience a unique, atmospheric space game, where things take time, and you have to plot a course and gradually move forward, slowly, yet steadily, in your own way. You get plenty of silly jokes, lots of narrator explaining new occurences, whether plot related or just simple decoration (not always in highbrow fashion)... you get nice chill music, sci-fi gadgets and tweaking of your suit, silly mysteries to solve, and oxygen supplies to appreciate...
I find it funny that IGN gives these kinds of games poor reviews, with stress on words like, "made me bored," then suddenly everybody is complaining with those exact words after some hours of trying out the game. I just think it is hilarious. Same thing with Hardspace: Shipbreaker.
In general, if you have patience and love sci-fi geekery and silly jokes: Might love this.
Otherwise: if your patience is as thin as depth of tiktok crowd, avoid :P
Funny, creative, and well written. Gets compared to Subnautica a lot but this is a great game on its own. I normally avoid early access titles, but on closer inspection this game while lacking in a complete story line (so far) is very well polished and is being actively worked on.
Charming stylized graphics, good controls, and bug/glitch/lag/problem free. That's how all early access games should present. Give this one a try you won't regret it.
