Breath of Fire IV

In a far-away world, two continents float, separated by a vast swamp-land. For eons, no contact existed between the two continents because ships couldn’t sail across the expanse. At last, when the historic first contact was made between the two powers, war erupted!
After long and costly fighting between the Fou Empire in the west and an alliance of countries in the east, both sides exhausted all their strength and resources. With no other alternative, the two powers agreed to an armistice.
One year later, Princess Elina vanished. She had been traveling in the east from town to town, exploring battlegrounds and visiting war veterans. Her trail vanished in a small town near the front line. Nobody knew her whereabouts!
The Eastern Alliance wanted to avoid sending a large army to the front. Such a move would be a political blunder, breaking the armistice and stirring up hostilities. It became impossible to carry out a large-scale search for Elina. Time passed... with no sign of the princess.
Elina’s sister, Princess Nina, finally makes up her mind. She leaves on a journey in search of her sister – by herself.
Ryu
Ryu meets Nina while he is lying unconscious on a street in a desert town in the eastern continent. His race and native land are unknown. Ryu has a Dragon’s Eye, which empowers him with the amazing abilities to transform into a dragon and summon dragons.

Nina
The princess of Wyndia, a town of the Fae tribe (winged folk). Nina meets Ryu on her journey to seek her lost sister Elina. Though somewhat naïve, Nina is skilled in Healing magic.

Scias
A mercenary soldier, Scias was hired by the eastern side during the war. Scias becomes the party’s watcher. He is very quiet and aloof from the world. Scias can perform a powerful double attack with his sword.

Cray

Sets a good standard
This is the one and only Breath of Fire game I've ever played, weirdly enough, and I made it almost all the way to the end before I lost track of the disc. Despite my not even barely having scratched the surface of everything there was to do in this game, I still remember it incredibly fondly for its unique, complex story and that absolutely luscious pixel art - so once I spotted it on the GOG store I happily bought it (again) to get the more complete experience as an adult. What we have here is effectively a one-to-one port of the original with minor and unintrusive quality of life updates to smooth out the "90's/early 2000s RPG" edges that came from the genre being way more experimental back then - and even with those qol features it's still the grindy timesink you know and love if you played the original, with the slight added jank of trying to accommodate for mouse and keyboard controls. If you HAVEN'T played the original, or any of the other classics from that time period, be aware that this is much more of a time and energy investment than a lot of modern turn-based RPGs, and a lot of that invested time involves "busy work" to prepare for not getting completely pasted against the nearest wall by whatever boss was up next. Regardless, this game is really something special and is a fairly faithful time capsule of the original experience, so if that sounds like something you're looking for then I highly recommend it.

Old School Cool
Playing this a trip back to the turn of the century when JRPGs were all the rage and anime styling was still fresh to people too. A quaint game by todays standards this is one that feels low-key and chill when compaired to the more Fast-paced and boisterous games of today. But if your looking for a slower more relaxed and unique old school RPGing experience this will do nicely - also it has dragons, everyone loves dragons! Thanks to GOG for making this somewhat forgotten gem playable again on modern hardward. They really are saints for their work in this field.

Great classic JRPG
I miss when we could get nice and simple JRPGs without bloating it with skill/crafting systems, nonsense stories, fan service, and excessive dialogue/cutscenes.
