Delightful, fun, quirky -- Book of Demons keeps you entertained as it provides a unique take on what Diablo and the ARPG genre provides. Unfortunately, it also becomes repetitive and aimless towards the end.

I’ve touched on the art style, but it really is gorgeous and unique, with paper outlines and great visuals. This, combined with the Flexisphere, which understands the limitations of modern gamers’ time better than any game I’ve seen, and with its streamlined mechanics and entertaining deck-building system, Book of Demons is definitely worth checking out.

Book of Demons introduces a unique card-based skill system and a sense of humor to the stuck-in-its-ways ARPG genre. It has plenty of tricks in its dungeon to keep you on your toes, but gives you ample ways to form your own strategy. With three distinct classes and an endlessly replayable quest, you can get lost in Book of Demons' papercut dungeon for quite a while.

Some nice idea, stolid execution
I know all isometric procedurally generated dungeon crawlers owe something to Diablo in one way or another, but there's saying the quiet part loud and then there's screaming it into people's ears. Too unsubtle to be an homage, played too straight to be a parody. But let's talk about the gameplay. There are some interesting ideas in there, but they're all held back by amateurish notions of what constitutes a difficulty curve. More health/layers of defense on enemies does NOT mean higher difficulty, it just means every floor taking longer to clear. By the latter half of the third act I was plinking away at one damage sponge after another; no matter how much I upgraded attacks and leveled up, I never felt more powerful. And I was playing on the lowest difficulty setting! The final boss was like swimming through tar, aggravated by the fact I was playing a Rogue, which means even one enemy getting too close disabled half of your skills. I didn't feel hyped at defeating the boss, I was relieved that I was finally done. This was a terrible experience even for a fan of the genre. I never want to play this game again.

Worst version of Diablo 1
Seriously? We walking on a fixed path? Clicking on mobs from distance as warrior? I would rather go back to Diablo 1, than playing this game.
