A horde boomer shooter with an integrated rogue-lite deck builder. You shoot the guys, you gain XP, on level up you get to chose an new gun, passive ability or spell from a choice of 3 to shoot the guys in new and interesting ways. There's bonus levels to unlock by finding secret items while you shoot the guys. In between missions you can spend money gathered while shooting the guys for permanent upgrades or the ability to banish "cards" as you level up.
Your weapons have infinite ammo, but they do have a set magazine size forcing you to reload. XP drops in "shards" that you need to get close to to pick up.
The game defaults to auto shooting, which you get used to quickly and I'd say is recommended for dealing with the hordes while the player focuses on movement. You learn quickly how to avoid shooting the (thankfully rare) exploding enemies, as the game doesn't have that much verticality. So just aiming up a bit will allow you to stop shooting avoid getting caught in their explosion. Headshots do bonus damage (or maybe just auto-crit), but as most enemies are the size of the player you can just keep the reticule at head height and enjoy the bonus damage. Manual shooting can be enabled at any point.
The focus is clearly on custom missions where you can change things like length and difficulty of any missions. It seems like the campaign is just familiarize yourself with the different maps, which probably wont take you longer 5 hours. After that it's up to you to replay your favorite levels any way you like.
One thing that deserves criticism is the length of these campaign missions. There is 2 campaigns, with 3 regular levels and a boss-level each, plus some unlock-able bonus levels. The very first level is 5 minutes and the third of each campaign is 30. Mission 1 of the 2nd Campaign is 15 Minutes long. I think the gameplay loop is good for 15 to 20 minutes, after which things get a bit stale. The last level of each campaign is a bit of a drag, tbh.
It also seems like the game is incomplete, the campaign select screen has a lot of empty space in it.
Tone wise the game is pretty straight forward: there's guys to shoot, and they are evil demons and demons worshipers.
The characters quip to insert humor and give the overall impression that the game doesn't take itself seriously.
