For those wanting a better experience out of the original BLood i would recommend you keep your already purchased old copy and use the free engine NBlood to play this game with all the new features without having to pay again for this game.
This version isn't supported on Linux, while the Eduke32 Nblood engine supports multiple OS
giving this game several chances, but I just can't do it. I can never get to the second level. The game is great! I love many dos fps games. The only problem I have with Blood are the controls. There are TOO MANY of them. I understand they give the player greater function and playability, but for myself, it's too much. Even when trying to configure the controls, there are literally over 20 buttons to keep track of. And choosing a button that doesn't overlap with others is a huge pain. If you're a keyboard master, I definitely recommend this game. But if you often have to check the keyboard to "look up" or use a "special attack" in the middle of carnage, you're gonna suffer. Other than that, the game has much worth.
Objectively speaking, this re-release does what was it was intended to do: it revives the classic game on a newer engine with some nifty modern features (mainly improved graphics and controls) plus the addition of the expansions and user-maps in a single executable (I'm sure you all already know this by now, but if you're like me and just found out about it, well, there you go).
At the same time, it's just not the real deal. This is not Build Engine, not even Build 2.0, it's Kex Engine. And while most people won't care about such things, it's still an issue to some of us in the community.
The remake has a serious problem in terms of graphics. Namely, if you're trying to run it on older systems, the installer will tell you that your computer is trash and won't even bother to install, or it will install and you'll get some lovely graphic glitches that'll make your game look like an x-mas decoration from Duke Nukem: Nuclear Winter (at least those were a feature!). A lot of people have apparently
complained about this, but the devs couldn't care less. "Upgrade you rig or don't play" is the outlining idea here. I'd agree if this were some really fancy modern game, but an almost back-to-back remake of a Build Engine game from the 90's? They can go sacrifice themselves to Chernobog for all I care.
Objectively, I'd give this a 4/5, but since I'm spiteful, and since it feels like a bad joke, I'll give it 1/5 (I'd give it less if I could).
GOG, please make 'One Whole Unit' purchasable again! That's the true way to play Blood!
