This was a spite buy for me after coming across the Rise of the Triad reboot, which was absolutely terrible. I remember playing through Blood 2 twice way back in the day and it wasn't as terrible as game as people make it out to be. Sure, you need to actually use cheats to pass through some spots cause the game is (was?) bugged AF, but hey... at least it's not as bad as RotT.
I'm gonna replay it just for kicks
Ohh man where to start with this game, its so bad that it got me to actually write my first review on here and I keep seeing people talking about how bad it is but nobody actually brings up how terrible it is. This is going to be long so get ready.
Lets start with knowing that this is not monolith's fault as GT was being bought out by infogrames at the time and was also filing bankruptcy so they didn't care at all. Monolith wanted more time to work on the game and GT gave them 11 months and shipped whatever they had done.
Plot- This plot is absolutely terrible and makes absolutely no sense especially near the end of the game. I know a lot of people say "Well its a shooter so who cares", but its there so why not. The ending makes absolutely no sense and there is no resolution whatsoever! It's very hollow and frustrating. Ohh btw if you play as anyone other than Caleb, the cutscenes will not play leaving you even more lost and making The Chosen worthless unless you feel like replaying this because you like pain or something.
Gameplay- Absolutely terrible as well. If you are playing on the easiest skill, which you should be, you can kill enemies in like 1 shot with a pistol. The other 2 skills which are basically hard and don't bother unless you really like frustration have some weird rng system with enemies making some super easy and the rest bullet sponges. The behemoth itself is just a giant bullet sponge. The first boss can kill you in one hit, the gideon fight is super cheap, enemies can shoot you while being shot and explosions and some projectiles go through walls all in all its frustrating and not fun. Caleb is supremely underpowered compared to enemies.
Level Design is interesting at first but gets boring and generic later. They reuse 2 levels 3 different times!
Do not buy this, its really bad. The nightmare levels make no sense and are also very terrible, they also mess with continuity, so just skip that one altogether. If you have to use Extra Crispy.
Tried playing for about 5 seconds and the game can’t be played without nonstop lag that makes the game move at about 1 frame a minute and sound bites repeating nonstop. Absolute mess of a game. Do not buy unless you are prepared to do loads of work to even be able to play the game
Great game, but there are a few issues. It's difficult to run on modern systems. To get it to launch, I spent 2 hours trying out different third-party patches and fiddling with my system settings. Eventually I got it working to a state where it has frequent visual glitches but is at least playable.
Gameplay doesn't feel as good as the first one. Graphics are better and it's true 3D, but something about the way guns and enemies react feels slightly off. Especially the shotgun, which feels more like a toy than a powerhouse. It's alright, just not amazing like Blood 1. It felt like the developers left everything unfinished. After reading more about the development, turns out this actually was the case.
Even with all the issues, I enjoyed the story and cutscenes more than the first one. The characters were better fleshed out and the dialogue is funny. Overall, don't get it unless you're willing to invest substantial time into getting this thing to run and putting up with the shortcomings. Needs a remaster with significant gameplay rebalancing.
