Battle Toads is not a good role model
It's a cute metroidvania that leans so hard into its retro aesthetic that it becomes difficult to tell what's going on, but it managed to suck me in for a few hours, so it's not too bad. However, it's one of those games that wants to be really hard, but leans more towards spectacle and memorization than tight controls and easy-to-learn-difficult-to-master mechanics. The end game is more an exercise in frustration than especially entertaining. If you're into this sort of game, pick it up on discount.
