Beacon Pines is a cute and creepy adventure set within a mysterious book. You play as both the reader of the book and its main character, Luka.
Something strange is happening at the old warehouse, and Luka and his friends seem to be the only ones taking notice. Sneak out late, make new friends, uncover hidden truths, and collect words that will change the course of fate!
While helping Luka investigate the strange goings-on in Beacon Pines, you’ll collect special golden charms, each with a word engraved on it. These charms can be used at certain turning points in the story to fill in a blank word and drastically change everything that follows.
As the book's reader, you’ll navigate the story’s turning points using The Chronicle: an interactive story tree that branches and grows along with your choices. Exploring one set of events can unlock new charms to use on another branch, leading you to jump back and forth between entirely different versions of the story in order to unravel the mysteries at the heart of Beacon Pines.
As the description says, you play the part of both reader and main character, with the narrator being your guide though the story. The narrator makes the game twice as good as it would be otherwise - she injects so much emotion and feels into this story, it honestly feels like a family member reading a story to you in bed.
Bought this today and played all the way through in one sitting. Totes adorable.
I really love this mechanic where you can go directly to the branching choices and try another branch. I think a LOT more VNs could benefit from that. (This is not a VN, but the branching choices concept is similar, and handled here better than most.)
It's a good game, has a solid story and plot with interesting characters, plus the concept of different timelines adds a lot of good stuff to this game. I only have a few complaints that made the experience not as good as I would have hoped for it:
The gameplay itself is alright, it does the job for conveying the story well but it's basic at best.
There is also a lack of voice acting that I feel is lacking in this game, especially since it's so story driven.
Overall its a good game but compared to other games which are also story driven I think it deserves this rating.
Being a fan of choose your own adventure games, I especially liked the Charm mechanic. I would definitely recommend this game, I would highly recommended the games soundtrack as well. I wish that they would release a sequel.
This was what you'd call a nice morning's worth of entertainment. That's not a bad thing, especially at the price. It took me about two and a half hours to finish it, even seeing all the alternate options at branch points. That doesn't mean its bad, just keep in mind its meant to be a short adventure that leaves you feeling satisfied at the price you paid for it.
I'm hoping to see the folks who made this game make more games in the same vein. Of course I'm big into classic adventure games, so maybe I'm a bit biased. It may not have been a classic adventure game, but it scratched the itch to a degree.
I've seen a number of adventure games use a branching tree system where you can go back and make other choices. For a game meant more for kids, the method they used for it was nice. The story book format in critical scenes was an excellent touch. The narrator's voice was also pleasing and fit the tone of the story as a whole.
