Decent
Buggy, but that's often the norm for these things at the outset. It's not a bad expansion, and I'm sure the subsequent patches will neaten it up

Mixed Bag( of Holding )
Yeah, the whole LGTB angle and political correctness kinda surprised me. Felt totally out of place and pace in a game like BG, that played on all the right fantasy tropes / stereotypes. Worst of all it was a 'in yo face' approach. I don't play D&D for that kind of stuff. You need this in your game...well, Second Life is your game. The usual crate-load of Bugs (God, the bugs) and funny design-choices in terms of UI were only mildly surprising. The Portrait selection (the custom ones) was the real shocker for me. As someone who has a extensive library i was quite miffed. That with being a click-fest. Other that that I don't mind the UI changes much. They are for the most part ok. And the Extra graphics options can be turned-off if desired. So no biggie that. The biggie was actually that once again, an update broke all mods and made updating all the mods necessary...again. That said, the addd-on boast some really nice atmosphere and mood. The IE is pushing awesome effects in terms of areas and level of details. The Crowd in BG is another nice example...unless it crashes. That being said, I think the Devs should have been more mindful writing SoD. The core audience is not the edgy sexually confused teen, but people like us in their prime. People who grew up with those characters and spent a great deal of time with them. Non of us felt that Jaheira's heckling of Khalid or her cynical nature was such a big deal, or that Minsc was a mockery of all people mentally challenged. Transgender or Political agenda aside, nothing can excuse bad writing. Selfinsert-fanfiction. None cares about sexual preferences of certain characters (Khalid wore a Gridle of Gender in my game), if we do not like a Char we do not invite him/her to the party. But we do care if they rewrite our beloved childhood Heroes as the see fit just to push SJW agendas. Refrain from buying till the MP and other glaring Bugs are fixed....not to mention the mod support.

Better than the original
So far, still in first half of game, this expansion rocks. Easily better than Baldur's Gate (1), and at times reaches BG2 levels. Great plot, good writing overall (some great bits, some slightly awkward ones). Some clever puzzles and so far one really intense sequence which involved both combat and puzzle-solving, on a (loose) timer. Voice acting on par with BG1 (I just replayed BG:EE in its entirety, so can compare). The new companions are fun; I expected to go with the old standards but am actually using new ones quite a bit here. The UI tweaks are improvements (though the UI and engine are showing their age, of course). So far (on OS X) zero bugs, though I do expect to run into a few at some point -- this game only released a few days ago. I understand there's a patch incoming pretty soon. Overall, if you're an old BG fan, you'll love this. This is much better than the first DLC (Tales of the Sword Coast). People who haven't played the original game will probably want to give this a skip -- much of what's great about this (and BG) is tinged with nostalgia, and BG2 is still the (much) better game.

disappointing
I really wanted to like this, I really did, but... - It's painfully buggy, - the graphical enhancements somehow manage to make a 16 year old game look worse - the characterization doesn't even attempt to be consistent with BG1 or 2 Now the political stuff is just insulting, there already was a trans character in BG1, and she was handled in a much more sensitive way than the mess in the expansion. Trans character 1: (The Ogre, right at the start of the original Baldur's gate) The ogre with the belt of gender swap. A character who has been forced to a life of crime to try and fix what's wrong with her. It might be subtle, but it's there and sadly rather representative of the plight of most trans people in the world through it's near invisibility. Trans character 2: (The merchant from the expansion) Unavoidable out of context rant about the issue
