Pretty fun until the end of the second act. You could tell the writers really thought they were clever from that point on, but it comes across as goofy and corny.
Very strong B-movie energy, you get bored before the ending because nothing gets taken seriously.
Too much sizzle and not enough steak.
Got the game on Steam. Disappointment of the year. Was really hoping to get lost in it, but it's not for me. Act 1 seems well crafted but never made it further...
...I really detest my party members. This may be personal taste but they're just so extremely unlikable. Compared to, for example, Baldur's gate 1 or 2 or Dragon age 1. The writing is good, I guess, I just can't stand them. I don't want to find out more about them.
The world also feels very small and comparatively empty. Sure, there's some encounters crammed into it, but some of them are literally like 100 yards away from each other. It's extremely immerson breaking. Doesn't feel like I'm on a grand adventure with beloved companions.
It feels like I've been forced into an escape room with a bunch of unpleasant strangers.
Also the graphical interface is painful and the camera is a red hot mess.
Playing this game made me miserable =( I feel cheated out of £50.
Code-wise and playability- the game is very polished and performs well. As a Forgotten Realms/Baldur's Gate game, I have to agree with so many others. I keep playing it and keep hoping that it will start to feel like its predecessors but it doesn't. And my two stars is for more than just the Baldur's Gate issue.
Every time I am playing and it comes to a dialogue and my character stands there, crosses their arms, and wobbles back and forth, I just want to yank the plug on my pc and beat my head on the desk. Melodramatic? Sure. Unwarranted? I have tried different races. Different classes. The character just looks like a ... I don't know what they look like but it isn't something brave and adventurous. More like an indignant ... something.
The voice acting thus far has been good. The gameplay itself performs really well.
Unfortunately, it's too late by far for me to ask for a refund. At this point, I can only hope the storyline engrosses me enough to play through and enjoy it as a fantasy rpg.
Just like all of Larian's RPGs, it has an amazing first act that makes you think you're playing the best game of all time, and then it quickly starts falling apart the minute the second act starts. Bugged quests, rushed content, railroading you down one path or another while removing lots of the free choice you were spoiled with in prior acts, romances that don't pay off, side quests that never tie up their loose ends, and long encounter gauntlets that are all but rigged against you.
90 hours in and I'm going to set it aside now and wait for the inevitable 'enhanced edition' where they go back and finish up the other 75% of the game.
