This game looks (for the most part) magnificent, and a great CRPG interpretation of the 5e System--and yes, it is 5e. Not 2e like the orginal BGs, and not Pathfinder (huh?).
My only complaint is that the map is pretty janky. It's hard to tell where you can and can't go, is hard to navigate, and on top of that is just plain ugly, especially compared with the artwork of the maps in the first 2 BG games (hence why I knocked off a star).
Most of the 1 star reviews are just complaining about how it's "too woke," and can be safely ignored by everyone who isn't ass-backwards. Bring on the gay bear sex, I say.
Here is what sets it apart from other RPGs:
1. Amazing story with extraordinary choice and consequences
2. Only consequential combat - no filler, each combat is different, no grinding
3. Non-combat role-playing options - including ways to avoid combat
4. Lots of loot that is meaningful. So much good equipment that even with four party members it can sometimess be hard to decide which pieces to use. There is equipment for every character build.
5. Large areas to explore with many hidden secrets. High perception on at least one char is important.
6. Total immersion, it is easy to get sucked into the story with all the cinematics.
Great story line, it's quite open for multiple outcomes that change the later acts as you play through. The game continues to open up more, and more, and then leaves you to your own devices as it progresses. I think this also might be why some people don't care for act 3, interaction availability is the result of many of your choices. I thought act 3 was solid and I ended up spending about 35-40% of my total play through in act 3. There are a lot of things to do in act 3, much of it depending on previous interactions and you have to explore and be inquisitive. I did notice act 3 has less "assistance" or attention grabbers and is just wide open. Some quests you can't complete or finish because of previous choices you have made, so keep that in mind.
Overall great game, prefer this to the original two BG games.
One of the best RPG's I have ever played (since the 80's... f***... damn you time, you cruel mistress!).
