Just release the source code already
I was super happy to see Dark Alliance finally release on modern platforms. But honestly $30 for a straight port is kind of silly. That's what I paid for it in 2001.

Something about this game is magic and I'm not talking spells.
Played this on the original Xbox, but only about 25% through. Looking forward to finally finishing the game. Something about this title that is so incredibly enjoyable. If you're an old time gamer like me, this game is like a modern version of 'Gateway to Apshai'. Something I played continuously as a kid on my Colecovision back in the early 1980s. Not too complex. Not too deep. Just tons of fun. BGDA is my kind of dungeon crawler.

Action-RPG Goodness priced too high
Despite the high price point I decided to bite the bullet and buy the game, and glad I did, I found the game to be a very solid action-RPG. It is more simpler than say Diablo and most Diablo-likes but I found the game to have just enough itemization and build options to make it interesting. Puzzles, simple platforming, traps and key/item hunting break up the monotony of hacking and slashing. Story was nothing interesting but the quality voice acting (Tony Jay and Jim Cummings to name a couple) made it feel slighly more grandiose. For Baldur's Gate fans there is not much here that feels like Baldur's Gate, and apart from the Baldur's Gate itself in act 1 there is barely any characters of plot elements from Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. However there are many returning voice actors from those games which is appreciated. Overall a great game which doesn't stay its welcome (took 11h to complete, but there is a new game + option as far as I know). It is rather simple by todays standards but I found it charming. A must buy for genre fans but wait for a sale as 30€ is asking a bit too much. To be noted: I played the game solo with an Xbox 360 controller, as keyboard and mouse controls didn't feel that good to play.

Console classic on PC (Linux User)
This is not a CRPG. It is a button mash dungeon crawler. It was released for PS2 and Xbox in 2001. I can see why people who don't know this would be disappointed when the gameplay is not what they expect. Dark Alliance is not an epic. It is a linear short story set in the Forgotten Realms universe. That's not to say the gameplay is short. There is enough meat on the bone, even if the story isn't the most in-depth. It's easy to pick up and put down and come back to later, easy for someone who's never played to jump into the action. Drop a second character in at any point during the game for couch co-op if you like, and remove them just as easily. Replayability depends on your personality. If you're the type that needs a new story every time you play then this basically has zero replayability for you. If you like gaining levels and finding better gear so you can crush the boss that one-hit you on your first run, or if you like playing again as a different class, then there's plenty more to do once you beat it the first time. In-game cheats will allow you to reset your level while keeping key stats for unlimited level-up potential (albeit at a cost after the first use). Perfect gear is hard enough to find, and better gear than what you currently have is common enough to keep you looking for both. You'll need to play the unlockable "extreme" mode to find the best stuff. Level progression is about what it should be. You won't max your character out in your first play-through, but as long as you mop up all the baddies along the way you'll be strong enough to kill the final boss. Despite my love for the game, the sentiment that this is not a perfect port is not unfounded. I would likely give only four stars if I didn't already feel like this game is unjustly taking a beating because of price and because people expect this game to be something it is not. I definitely want to see the sequel released. Read on for the bad. A little polish for the PC release would have been nice. There are only minimal video options available. If your display runs at >60hz then you'll have to find alternate means of reducing it back to 60, otherwise everything will run in fast-forward. Other than that, you might notice some tearing, but overall it doesn't look too bad for its age and no makeup. There are bugs in the original console game which have carried over to this port, and some that have appeared in its release. Also, there seem to be a couple of things removed from the original release. Bugs: -Character wisdom cannot be raised above 44. Doing so will crash the game. This won't ever be a problem for most people, but it exists. This bug was also in the original release. -You MUST reset your character if you're ever crazy enough to level up to level 48. This would likely take you an eternity and a half, but attempting to level beyond the 48th level will cause your inventory menu not to work anymore. I believe this was also a thing in the original. -Begin hyper-saving once you reach the rotting bog. Combat in the swamps up through the sunken temple has a tendency to crash the game randomly. It seems more prevalent during co-op. This has just been my experience. This did not happen in the original game. It only seems to be in these areas, mostly while fighting lizard men. -Level warp cheat menu does not scroll. This makes using it very difficult, but it's a cheat code and not really necessary for normal gameplay. -Controller vibration does not seem to work properly. Not the end of the world, but it is nice to know when you're about to die. Removed: -Bug or removed? Drizzt does not become available in character selection after beating extreme difficulty. It's still easy to play as him by exporting from the gauntlet, but that shouldn't be necessary. -Most importantly, the Elfsong Remix has been removed from the final credits. Shame on you! This was my reward for not switching the console off after beating the game. This release forces me to watch credits roll while listening to crickets. Very odd. If you've never played this and you and a friend enjoy button mashing or dungeon crawlers I would definitely recommend this title. It is also fun to play single player, but its real charm shines through when playing with someone else. I'd say wait for it to go on sale if you plan to play alone and you don't already have a nostalgic connection. Can't wait for the sequel!
