Unbelievable value
I paid $150 to get these six games and never regretted a penny. Awesome games, as long as you are willing to use a bit of imagination with graphics, etc.

classic old school but unbalanced
the combat system of the game is designed against the player, there are limits put in the player that are not in the enemies, especially in: 1: the number and power of the summons. 2: number of attacks. 3: resistances and strength 1. summons: according to internet history, creator of the game nerfed the player summonings but did not nerf the computer enemies. This results in making you summon one monster per char which is weak and the enemies will summon between 5 and 6 enemies way powerful than anything you can muster. any enemy mage is a chore due to this. do you fight against 3-4 demons? prepare yourself, in one turn you will have 3-4 hasted demons plus 10-20 high level summons. 2. attacks: you attack multiple times based on your stats with a very low CHANCE to trigger a second attack, the enemies have multiple attacks set by design that always trigger, this is made even worse by the next point. 3. normal enemies are ok, they are clearly weaker than you, but the special enemies, that is, demons, high level enemies and bosses are unbalanced in how they deal damage and resist. Basically if you can have 12-14 str at the end of the game, these enemies behave like they had 40 str (which is basically unattanaible to you) . the same with your resistances versus theirs. probably if you are looking at this game is because you like old school feeling and this game has that plus an excellent lore and a ux that honestly has aged very well and makes playing the game very smooth if one has into account its age but this is clearly a game that has not been player tested in any way and that most of the combats after the middle of the game are beaten through over leveling and trial and error. my experience is from playing hard difficulty. the hardest difficulty is called "tormentum" and the name is spot on.

The best RPG series I've played
These are not only the best RPG games, these are my favorite games of all time, despite the changes made on the second trilogy (mainly the abscence of outdoors, making the game somewhat tiring), the storyline and the freedom to do almost whatever you want are the reasons that made me love the series.

PC RPGs still superior to Console styled
First of all, contrary to what the "Content is King" review says, only the first two Avernums/Exiles are solely underground. The third one is primarily above ground. RPGs are really tactical simulation games and the Avernum games really shine here. My only gripe with the first two Avernums is that the first two only allow you to play humans, which bores me to tears and limits the strategic/tactical options. But from the third game onward they are much more enjoyable both because of the two nonhuman races and the expansion out of the underworld. The Avernums lack the combat options of top down CRPGs like Natuk and Helherron such as aiming for specific body parts, wielding two weapons, etc. but they make up for this with great encounter design and challenging enemies. Blades of Avernum is probably the best of all of these games because it allows you to play unlimited user-created scenarios (like the old FRUA game system) and the fan made scenarios are often even better than the official games and scenarios from Spiderweb. I prefer Blades of Exile (BoE) over the BoA because I like the old game system better and it is free/open source. The text holds no interest for me but thankfully you can ignore it and still get through the games without much trouble. Overall I give Avernum 1 & 2 three stars, Avernum 3, 5 & 6 four stars and Avernum 4 two stars (it is easily the worst Spiderweb game ever made). Blades of Avernum gets four stars for being so infinitely replayable.

Nostalgia At Its Finest
I remember playing this game years and years ago. Ever since, I have forgotten what it was called and have been looking for it since. This game is absolutely great. It's far from perfect, but it's still loads of fun. I didn't like how no one else moved unless you moved, but I still remember spending countless hours on this game just screwing around. God how I missed this game.
