A great RPG that brought back memories of old times. When you had to read and imagine than watch a cinematic and drool. In the end, I find that imagination was the best cinematic. The lack of music is the only downside that I found, but, in the end, a great game !
The best thing about this game is also the worst. Combat is spectacular, until you hit the endgame. Why? Because the writing and story are sub-par. It's a generic tale. NPC's all have the exact same style of writing (they all feel like the same person). Quests are run here, get that, with a few secret ones. Without a compelling story, there is only one reason to play this game.... Combat. There is literally no other reason to play this game (no secrets, no items, no events). It dies out halfway through the game.
I would consider myself a completion-ist. If you are like me, then by the time you get about halfway through the game, you will have every spell, the best items, and there is really no point in playing anymore. You will destroy every enemy, wipe out every boss, without thinking. This game is no challenge if you just try to complete all of the quests.
I give it three stars, because I had fun for the first half (about five hours). When I realized the game was just repeating itself and I couldn't improve my characters, I gave up.
To be honest, it is sad that spiderweb games is one of the few companies keeping the cRPG alive, as they are not really all that good. The story line is deep and engaging i guess, but it does not even come close to the levels of say Baulders Gate, or even Temple of Elemental Evil. I made it a dozen or so hours into the game, and found the biggest problem with the game is the pacing. There are places you can breeze past, then all of a sudden you run into a small dungeon or boss, that is utterly unbeatable until you level more, and backtrack to that location. I spent more time trying to figure out where I could level, then actually leveling, and I had to spend my time doing that, because, the actual story line was at that point too over leveled to continue. I can not say if my experience is unique, just that the pacing is rough. Very rough. If you are expecting something similar to the 90's cRPG, its close, but no cigar, and you are probably better off replaying any of the Black Isle games.
if you like ultima reading and big descions this is your game. it is not half bad compared to spiderwebs other games this one is their best so far. hopefuly one day they pay more attention to fine detail and mapping for such a small download add a couple mb for a more fufilling world, with that aside it is well worth the money. btw this game makes you a big shot who decides how to handle situations
A solid introduction to Spiderweb's RPGs and old school CRPGs in general. A little too streamlined and simplistic for the hardcore fan of the genre but still an enjoyable journey.
