Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

The only reason it is possible to overlook such crippling bugs in this game is because it has such depth and freedom of character development and playstyle, as well as an interesting world and main story. Games like this one epitomize to me the contrast between highly linear JRPGs and open-world western RPGs. I cannot stand the former and adore the latter. As the latter, Arcanum allows you to create a mind-boggling variety of character types, even deciding their backstory which actually affects the abilities of the character. The game world itself is challenging but rewards free roaming exploration with hidden treasures and side-quests. But there are the bugs. My first play through was destroyed by a bug. Having focused primarily on one save file, I was unprepared for the bug that corrupted that save file and ruined my game. It caused me to quit Arcanum initially. I had to come back much later (after I got over my frustration) and re-attempt the game. On the bright side, this allowed me to approach the game from an entirely different perspective (using technology instead of magic) and appreciate the game all the more. I also learned my lesson. If you play this game, please please please use multiple save files. I recommend saving often, and using several save files in case one gets corrupted. You will not be disappointed with the game itself. It is magnificent!

I'd like to start with this: if only someone, and for someone I mean Bethesda*, would buy the license of this game and make a new one or even a remake I'll be the happiest person in the world. As the title says this is one of the best RPGs you can experience. It excels in story, mechanics, soundtrack, which is one of my favourite. I love this probably a lot more than other people because I love steampunk. This game is deep in mechanics on both magic and technology, you can create various gadgets that will help you in every occasion or even learn a spell to resurrect people. I'm not so good with words, buy the game and you will undersant how great it is. **whispering* let them know we want an Arcanum game.

5 Stars. Game is always fun to start up and play through. I still have the retail disc but picked this up on sale so I don't have to dig it up every few years. The mechanics have some quarks and aren't always balanced if you take the right (or wrong) builds, but it doesn't take away from how well made and written the game is. Also there is plenty of support for high-resolution mods available.

Best Endings in any RPG I ever played.

For me, the best RPG I have ever played. Set in an original, yet very well thought out universe, Arcanum lets you walk a path between the opposing forces of technology and magic. Character development is very rich, but you can make it as easy or complicated as you want. It is set in an open world with near infinite freedom, although you can just follow the story to guide you through it. Each town and area you enter has its own history and a diverse set of quests, with some very extensive side quests. Because of the rich story and many actions that will affect the world during gameplay and after you finish the main story (multiple endings!), it is a highly replayable game. Have fun
