Another what could have been...

Enjoyable engine with reasonably immersive underwater movement and minor skirmishes in nice environments. Shame more time seems to have been spent on writing text for background and adding in backer characters than in designing a campaign. Got the feeling this is like the Battlefield series, "We market for multiplayer so create a few standard bot spawns and call it a campaign." Don't bother trying to build up all ships, even scavenging will make it hard to afford. Then suddenly you get access to all the mods for them just in time to have one final, dull battle, never getting a chance to compare. Cut to ending sequence. "Is that it?" Like Mechwarrior 5, this hints at what could have been an excellent game, expanding factions interplay and time to develop ships before reaching an end, or adding in just a few more bounty missions might have helped. Why put repeating hints in as you enter an area that tell you exactly what to do rather than having some discovery (not checked if you can turn hints off). Feels like shareware you pay for to test out the game, in anticipation of forking out more for DLCs that might make it a full game.

Deeply Decent

Deep Descent is, in short, a 'reboot' of the AN/AD universe that has similar gameplay and atmosphere, but is generally below the bar that the original saga set. It's still a serviceable enough 'sub-shooter' but it drags on and doesn't excel in any area - and falls short in a couple. If you're a fan of the series, you're less likely to enjoy it IMHO. For a more detailed breakdown, read on. Alright, so as I said, I don't think this game satisfies 'fans' of the original Archimedean Dynasty & AquaNox games. It retcons core points of the world and story and weakly tries to tie back into the original games (which doesn't really land). The characters, atmosphere, "lore" and plot all lack the punch of the earlier titles, even AN2 fares better in this regard, and much of it comes off as a watered down, less poignant, less deep, and infinitely less interesting version of the existing world. The main storyline itself is alright, with some somewhat predictable twists and highlights here and there, but the whole narrative package is weak in general. Much of the 'pressure' of the original atmosphere is missing or very faint here - the look into the inside of Aqua and its political, religious, medical, psychological and narcotic-based crises, with all the differing voices and outlooks, is almost entirely gone, and all pressure comes from 'outside'. In short, it's much harder to submerge yourself into the world of Aqua in DD, and yes, this and all prior puns were entirely intentional. From a gameplay standpoint, DD also feels a bit watered down - though it has some ups on its predecessors, the change from the higher intensity mission-based structure into a sort of 'open world' hurts the pacing of the game and isn't truly utilized to its full potential. Combat is still fun, but it also feels like an offshoot rather than an upgrade or continuation. All that said, though, Digital Arrow had a lot to live up to, and little budget to do so, so I commend them nonetheless.

An okay low-budget shooter

So, I finished ADD yesterday after about a dozen hours or so. Lore-wise it's the usual post-apocalyptic tale where the few people that survived the nuke war/plague/catastrophe are fighting over scarce resources but in this game, WE'RE UNDERWATER! You goof around in a miniature submarine, fighting your way through pirate-held territories and do chores for different factions for fuck knows what reason wth the over-arching task is to save the world. Gameplay-wise it's a Descent-style shooter with the usual types of weapons and ships to choose from. It's pretty okay but with few surprises and even fewer twists to spice up the action. Traversing the ocean floor and seeing the remenants of our civilization (you visit both the pyramids and the heart of Berlin) is pretty cool but the visuals are unimpressive while still demanding on the GPU. I really wish the developers had done more with the underwater theme but besides a few caves there are few things to remind you of it. The music is pretty good but the voice acting is sub-par to put it politely. All in all, a very average game that won't give you fond memories but if you want a few hours of braindead shooting, knock yourself out!

A great game for spaceship romantics

Welcome to my very first serious review. See the quantity of the stars? The game deserves it. Considering if you should buy this title or not? I assume you might be a spaceship romantic - and maybe you have experienced such masterpieces as Freelancer. If this is true, believe me you will find the game to be cozy. Water feels more like home than empty space - and the "corridors" seem to be less out of place here than some debris in outer space. The dialogues and the lore will not overwhelm you, though it keeps one in touch with the world around; I find such balance to be good for this type of a game, though the ones who read the whole encyclopedia in Starlancer at once might disagree. Yes, the developers could have drawn an extra individual portrait or two - but hey, it is so refreshing to hear your engines start every time you move underwater all these wish-you-were-here thoughts don't matter in the end. It was one of my childhood dreams - to start an engine of a tiny submarine and dive into the unknown. If this is something that matters for yourself, you may buy the game and have a great experience. The final arguement: I have bought Cyberpunk 2077 and Aquanox Deep Descent - great games, both of them. What do you think I'm playing now?

I really like this game

I am no where near the end of the game, but I had to review it. I really like this game. The game play, and story are both great. It runs well through Lutris on linux. One thing that seems odd about Aquanox - Deep Descent, is that it is an underwater game. Everything about it screams space shooter. Almost like the game was done and then someone said, "F&@* IT, were going with water." Then wrote the plot around that last minute decision. It really reminds me of the X3 games, but underwater. I kinda wish there was a sandbox survival mode. Take Subnautica and Aquanox and smash them together. I would buy that DLC all day. Who knows, maybe by the time I am done with the main plot that is exactly what I will have. If this game had some base building and Inside spaces (walk around sea bases, inside of ships, etc... I would have given it 5 stars. I recommend this game to anyone who likes space shooters, and Subnautica.
