Imagine Hotline Miami, except instead of picking up various weapons like baseball bats and crowbars and throwing them at people, you just pick up people, and throw the people at the people.
It's just as amazing as it sounds.
It's fast paced and incredibly satisfying, helped very well by the soundtrack. It's not quite as unforgiving as Hotline Miami, you can take a bullet or two, but you can still go down pretty quickly, especially if you get surrounded. The art style makes it very easy to identify what sort of enemies are which at a glance, which meshes very well with the fast pace of the game.
Overall, all the various aspects of the game, the controls, the sountrack, the art style, the level design, all come together to create something simple, intense, and and incredibly gratifying. Would wholeheartedly reccomend.
Super fun arcade style game that plays out like Hotline Miami, but with apes instead. You start out as a caged ape that must escape and get revenge on his captors in 32 frantic action packed levels, one of which is an end game bonus level, featuring a nice jazz ensemble to keep with the beat. It is essentially Donkey Kong on steroids where you can smash and explode your enemies in gory fashion, as well as using your wits and environment to your advantage. If you are a Devolver Digital fan then this is a must.
Ape Out is awesome. Played mostly with M+KB on a laptop, preferable over gamepad.
You're a big gorilla in a science facility. You see other gorillas dead in neighbouring cells and people looking at you, very close to the glass seperating you two. They must've killed your brethren.
TIME FOR RETRIBUTION. TIME TO ESCAPE. THE APE IS OUT.
The aim of Ape Out is to escape the environments you're trapped within. Whether it's the science facility, a compound, a skyscraper or a shipping dock, you need to get out of there.
YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SURVIVE IF YOU STAY.
And there are many people there that will shoot and explode you to death along the way. And if you're too reckless or too restrained in your destruction, you're not going to make it.
But you're a giant ape, who can throw or grab people with impunity. You are a beast that will leave puddles of blood, where men defiantly stood in your way. Don't hold yourself back.
The levels between your cage and your exit isn't going to be the same between deaths. Be ready to adapt to your environment, just as an escaping gorilla will do so.
An off-screen drummer will play alongside you. Each object you smash, and every person you kill, will be scored with loud crashes and energetic drum beats. Walking along plays a bassy rhythm, and you feel how heavy you are.
YOU WILL FEEL THE VIOLENCE.
The gorilla will direct its sights where your mouse is, and moves faster when it's moving forward. This sounds like tank controls; to me, it is. And it's better if you treat it like that, because walking sideways or backwards will invite you to get killed. Get in there, and and kill some people.
This game isn't very long, and thank goodness. The ending is phenomenal, and among the best in games. Its simple gameplay will tell a simple story:
YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE FREEDOM.
Fantastic game. I recommend this to everybody.
This review is written with Jacob Geller's "Ape Out and Freedom" in mind.
It's a simple idea, done right. The gameplay and the music comes together beautifully. The game is sometimes hard, but fair. The music is splendid.
I will not play this as much as the AAA-titles i'm buying this year, but I will remember it longer and I will come back to it for many years.
