Just the Viking intro cinematic sets the scene. It in fact, be one of the coolest intros ive seen in a long time. That's just the start too! Other than that, the game runs smooth as can be and is gorgeous. More importantly, its extremely fun and captivating. I absolutely love the sounds of battle and combat animations! A must buy, especially for 50 percent off!
The game is actually really enjoyable for me. Love the setting in early middle ages, we have good variety of nations in the game, missions can be very satisfying and take quite some time, I like it.
Technically it is perfect. I haven't met any major bug or crash, no frame drops. Only sometimes I had an opportunity to see a dead, t-posing soldier hung like 20 meters above the ground. :D
Unfortunately it is a very rough, unpolished gem when it comes to the design of the game. Yes, the campaigns are very different from each other in case of setting and story. but gameplay-wise there are a lot of copy and paste scenarios I would say. There are a lot of missions which are basically designed like this - "Hey, here you go, some starting troops. Capture this village, then you can start developing your base and capture other villages to finally destroy enemy camp." So the campaign can get repetitive. Also, some campaigns have very complex and time consuming missions, like the campaign of Saladin, and on the other hand we have the Mieszko campaing, which is very disappointing for me. Very fast, quite repetitive and not really satisfactory. But overall I enjoyed the story.
What I hated the most is the army management. Allowing player to have only 10 units. I really wanted to create an army with variety of troops, but I wouldn't have enough warriors in larger battles so I just ended up recruiting full stack of spearmen - they are OP imo, very strong unit, can withstand anything in battle. There's no point to have archers or cav - you can rush anything with only spearmen and actually it works the best. Third, all nations have very similar rosters, so there is no tactics, which nation can overcome other etc. There are problems with selecting troops, sometimes you give orders to an unit you didn't selected. Micromanagement - I hate that I cannot pull back unit from fight without retreating it.
To sum up, I'd say it is a solid game, but has it's issues. Worth getting on sale.
Well this is my first time writing a review ever it's been a long time since last i was captivated by a game i love expansion based RTS like Dawn Of War and the latest SF3 and this game did that very nicely the graphics are smooth the tactics are reasonably realistic and it's challenging enough to keep u engaged the campaign stories are very good especially the tactics of wars used in it.
Over all if u like tactics and RTS this game is a must have in MHO.
Graphic blender without much RTS substance - don´t buy
Having played through the Vikings campaign completely, I have to say that "Ancestor´s Legacy" is not much of a RTS game, it´s more like a "action game with RTS elements". As a fan of classic RTS games such as Stronghold, Company of Heroes or Age of Empires II, I have to critize so many aspects here: The ridiculous low unit limit (10 units max.), no real base building (you can´t decide yourself where you want to put buildings, only a few options to choose from), very weak AI and repetitive mission structure. It might be something for console players who have never experienced a real RTS game, but not for PC gamers with classic RTS experience. Yes, the graphics are fine, but I don´t want to watch nice animations all the time, I want to play a good game. Don´t waste your money here.
I bought this game after playing the demo of the Viking campaign. That campaign has amazing intro and drive, story telling is good and captivating. They managed to get the most out of Unreal engine. Game is also quite well optimized, so I managed to play this on Medium on the office laptop (later missions on Low).
I was happy with inclusion of the Slavic campaign (last game that did this well were Cossacks) but the story there is a bit meh, the campaign is boring and clearly lacks the cinematic drive of the previous Viking campaign. If on sale, it's worth buying for the the Viking campaign, the other campaign give show to the repetitive missions and gaming mechanics. Build, heal retreat, etc.
