Welcome to Anachronox, an abandoned alien artificial planet at the centre of the universe, now home to lowlifes, thieves, and scoundrels. Here we join Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli--a down on his luck PI--and a cast of 6 other unlikely heroes on their quest to discover who or what is trying to destroy the universe. They are the only ones that believe it is happening, and the only ones that can do something about it.
This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
This is a magical RPG with so many different places to discover and superb puzzles but not too many, this game was made before its time and if it was to be made today with the advancement in gaming it would really blow you away its truly a super dooper game, if the people who own the game and make a complete remake from the drawing board it would really be a fantastic number 1.:-)
This is a highly original and entertaining adventure. Good story, great characters and quite good voice acting for such an old game.
You never truly know what to expect next in this game which keeps you interested almost all the way through. It drags on slightly towards the end though.
The game is by no means perfect and is what you might call an unpolished gem. But it is definitely worth a playthrough if you like a sci-fi themed rpg adventure with a witty dialogue.
There. It's included with the game. Saved you hours of frustration, config editing, patching and troubleshooting. You can even set the game to launch the GCT Launcher by default when you hit "Play."
Now, for the game itself - after several hours of the above, once I finally had it running smoothly, got absolutely sucked in, only expected to play for a half-hour or so and ended up playing nearly four hours and am excited to get back in and play more. The controls take a little bit to get used to, but after an hour, they'll be second nature. I was surprised at the quality of the humor, voice acting and general immersiveness of the game. It's good. Like, holds up today good.
The models, environments and such are blocky "as was the style at the time", but the artistry is there. The environments have lots of background animation and scripting that combines to make each area more impressive than the sum of its parts. The real-time battles taking place in those same environments only add to the feeling that everything takes place in the world. It's wonderfully done.
I'll likely update this review after I've finished the game - but considering a lot of people start up old games and never complete them, I'll say this for anyone who wants to know if four hours of Anachronox is worth the few dollars you'll spend on it? Absolutely.
Such a special game to me and one that is very unique. A western take on the JRPG genre with such an incredibly unique world, amazing music and atmosphere as well as very solid storytelling and characters.
I understand what this game is trying to do. It want to tell a story about a down on his luck detective in a wacky wonderful space world full of humor. To some extent it works. But the good parts are too few and spread out to justify the time spent playing the game.
Characters are fun but interactions with them are pretty sparse. Combat is awful and grindy. Its hard starting out and very easy after that. There is no in game justification for the combat other than that a game like this ought to have it.
Level design is large and empty and have no fast travel. It can be quite interesting due tyo the interesting world it takes place in but only the first time you see it. The first area is a long line with a lot of elevators with mandatory cutsceenes playing and thats just a waste of my time.
There are a lot of things that wastes your time, with unclear instructions and trial and error.
I might finish this game at some point, but sender station is where I jump off for now.
