Good, but truly not more than that.

Before you read this, I didn't play this game when it came out. So I think I played without nostalgia glasses and, at the same time, didn't enjoy in ''its prime time''. Besides that, I guess the best review I can come up with is ''it's ok''. I would say that the most attractive part of the game is the story, with some funny dialogue, some good twist and a little pool of well-written characters (and it isn't ''astonishing'', it's good but felt like it could have been more). Instead, regarding gameplay mechanics and overall look, it's average. Not to dismiss it as ''bad'' but the effort that Ios storm put it in the game didn't match the general ''output'': slow gameplay, sometimes too simple or straightforward (besides the IMMENSE backtracking this game, sometimes, forces you to do, which slows it even more) My personal opinion is that after Daikatana failure, Ios storm (or Romero) wanted to try something more ''safe'' and came up with Anachronox. In the end, would I advise to play it? yes, if you like turn-based RPG ( or jrpg, or at least I felt like it was one) with some different mechanics than the norm, all mixed with some good dialogue and story (for the most part). If you don't like this particular genre, I would say: give it a chance, but prepare yourself for a long walk (literally, my half gameplay time was spent by only walking!)

Needs nostalgia to be fun

As someone who has never played this before, I had nothing to go on but other reviews. I tend to like old games with good stories so I thought I would like it. It starts out fairly boring and it lags when leaving a conversation or cinematic - seriously just shifting the camera from the guy you were talking to back over to behind your character takes half a minute sometimes, and I'm running the game off of an SSD! I finally called it quits when I got stuck in the floor of Frank's Flophouse after accidentally walking into the corner of a railing and falling through part of a catwalk. I think it's fun for those who have played it before, but I can't recommend it to someone new. The problem is not that it's just old, but that it's old and it's slow and it's buggy. Go play something else.

buggy

Had several bugs, or what I"m hoping were bugs and not just game mechanics (considering the number of good reviews for this game), but plenty bad game mechanics as well. Minor problems with movement (character would "stutter" frequently). Combat was very awkward, seems a third person action game shoehorned into a party based rpg system?, very limited movement options while in combat. Strange animations that would proceed slowly for up to 10 seconds with only slow camera movement occurring (I thought the game had locked up several times..nope..still going, v e r y s l o w l y). same thing (quasi-lock up) after the frequent animations when transitioning between areas. the courser as character gave the game a point and click adventure feel that i didn't like, and seemed corny (like the rest of the game) but it did work fine...so may not be an issue for most.

Works fine on wine on linux. For high resolution, you can download it on WSGF. Just choose the folder suiting your screen resolution and copy paste the two files in the game folder and enjoy! (also works on linux)

I'll always have 2001.

When I first played Anachronox 24 years ago, it became an instant, lifelong favorite. So when I saw it on GOG, I didn’t hesitate to add it to my wishlist. The moment it dropped to $0.97, I bought it without a second thought. Many classic games stand the test of time—I can replay Doom, The Sims, Deus Ex, or Resident Evil endlessly, and they still feel great. Unfortunately, Anachronox hasn't aged as well. It’s aged like milk. After about an hour, I tapped out and requested a refund. The graphics and story still hold up, even by today’s standards, but the gameplay feels clunky and frustrating. At least I’ll always have my memories of playing it back in 2001. Some games are best left in the past.
