Breaks my heart...

Oh dear. I am a massive Tex Murphy fan and just thought I'd give this a whirl out of nostalgia for Access Software. It has some charm and fun, but my God, it's hard work. I can forgive a lot, given that it was in the formative years of PC gaming, when no-one really knew what they were doing in terms of gameplay. Obviously, to their credit, they were trailblazing and learned very quickly from the mistakes made in this game. What broke it for me is the same problem that Martian Memorandum has (although I played through the latter the first time without issue). That is, if you fail to collect something (cigarettes in the case of Amazon), there is NO WAY to progress when you need to use it. The only recourse is to return to a saved game, which would be fine if you only had to go back and replay a fairly short sequence. In this case, you have to go back to Chapter 4 (assuming you have a saved game) from Chapter 8. adventuregamers.com have a very well balanced review of the game, so check that out as well.

Fun, obviously old-school game

This is a solid adventure game from a company that went on to do a bunch of other wonderful adventure games. The graphics are good for their time and the puzzles are all fair enough. It's not overly long and it will not bore you. Other than the annoying canoe sequence, I had a blast from start to finish. As for offensive "colonialist overtones" and other woke criticisms from the over-colleged, just ignore them and play a game that perfectly captures the flavor of late 80's early 90's adventures. Although I do wonder why GOG chose to crop out the Amazon woman from the games digital cover.

Replaying my roots!

I built my first comuter in 1994. It took me one year so build it because I was working at a mall food court at 15 years old and paying part by part. This game and all of Access software's games have been a staple for me. Just love every game they have made!

Nostalgic af

Man oh man, I played this game as a little kid and I have very vague memories of some of the scenary. I've been attempting to find this game again for a while and finally did here on GOG. The mechanics are a bit tricky as you may expect from a 30+ year old game, but honestly I had to look up how to complete some of the tasks in the game. Even with the help of the internet it took me over 14 hours to complete this game. I bought it on sale and don't regret my purchase at all, 1st game I've bought on GOG, here's to many more. Cheers!

Cheap pulp fiction

I am sorry to be this harsh because Chris Jones is one of the guys that I respect the most in the industry and I love the Tex Murphy adventures, but Amazon is probably the worst thing he has designed and / or released. An Access adventure that puts aside what was stronger on the rest of their games (the conversation puzzles, the amount of text) and focus on the worst (timed sequences, arcade sequences, sudden deaths) and this time with a really messy graphical style that makes most of the screen, er, ugly. I am all for a Cannon Films kind of exotic adventure that goes all the way for the pulp (well, ignoring the colonialist overtones but we all knew what we came for) but this is just an inconsistent mess. It looks like it is older than Countdown when it was released around 2 years later.
