Edward Carnby and Aline Cedrac are about to face their worst
nightmare!
Out to avenge the murder of their friend and colleague, they
arrive on Shadow Island only
to discover that it is held in the grasp of an evil force.
Now they must uncover clues to help them reclaim three ancient
tablets, before the ultimate terror is unleashed! Confronted by
menacing creatures and unspeakable horrors, will they survive the
night?
The spiritual continuation of the famous Alone in the Dark series - the precursor to the survival horror genre!
A chilling and gripping story where there's always something hiding beneath the surface
Very immersive horror atmosphere that will make you jump out of your skin
The New Nightmare is nothing extraordinary. But I bought it anyway because it's dirt cheap during sale and performs really well on modern system (It can run on Full HD, which for a game released in 2001, is good).
Back in the beginnings of 2000's this was a game that you would rent, maybe a couple or three times. It's a short, decent old game, designed to be a distraction for a couple of rainy weekends.
Forget of spending thousands of hours grinding to acquire the best equipment, take it as a long film with some interactivity and tank controls.
If you take this into account, it's still funny and you won’t be disappointed.
Best played with friends, especially childhood friends and some beers.
PS: There seems to be some problems if you choose the wrong language (White screens and so on), I've changed the language and the issue seems to not persist.
I bought this a long time ago for a 5er, but it isn't worth it. The game is alright graphically and it's ok in puzzles and monster and such but the most awful thing of all that takes the enjoyment out of it is this:
Enemies respawn, ammo does not.
When you shoot a zombie and you move screens, tada it's back alive. Not so bad in general, but you run out of ammo if you keep shooting them and sometimes they can't be avoided. You can not get new ammo and the shooting is hit & miss anyway, so this is a truely fatal flaw.
Divide my review into 2 parts:
- Regarding compatibility: to be played, in windows 10 pro it is required to open the game folder and search for "launch.exe". It must be opened as an administrator with windows 98me compatibility. Once this, you must choose the 800 resolution option plus the high resolution.
- Regarding the game and its importance :: Without a doubt, it is a hidden gem. Perhaps it has been distorted by its successor, but the new nightmare is a Lovecraftian proposal with hundreds of references to the occult. I could compare it more with an eternal darkness, but the new nightmare is more action horror game, such as the RE series. Atmosphericly it's great, and it's definitely in my top 3, along with RE 2-3 and Silent Hill in that time.
Before there was Resident Evil there was Alone in the Dark. This is the game that started it all off. Alone in the Dark 4 - The New Nightmare is one of the all-time classics. It's got a great story, great horror atmosphere, great graphics, and great lighting. A truly spooky old style horror game.
Did you ever turn on a movie without reading the scenario and enjoyed the beginning more than usual? Or did you ever listen to a friend tell you all the best bits and then go see it and find that your expectancy rate was too high? I also think a good tip after a reviewer played a game that left them feeling frustrated etc would be to read the walkthrough as they may not have noticed something obvious like ammo or med kits in a crate nearby etc. I feel this would create more accurate reviews.
No spoilers here. Get it and be pleasantly surprised.
