Great idea ok implementation...

The trailer is short and gives a good idea of what to expect. If you additionally look at the first minute or two of a playthrough there will be nothing surprising in the rest of the game. Which is fine, it is supposed to be relaxing and low key and it is. A game about birdwatching is a great idea but I suspect it is more complex than most games to implement in a minimally decent way. So this one just being minimally decent in my opinion is not as harsh of criticism as it might seem. The way the birds move around is not overly repetitive and while there are a few graphical glitches they don't distract from the game in my opinion. Most of the issues I have with the game are style issues that you can tell from the trailer and first minute or two of gameplay if you won't like them. There weren't really any wow moments in the game in my opinion, although the transition between days was really nicely done and I also appreciate the scenic views where you can sit for a bit and the camera zooms out to give a wider view of the island. The game is a good length for what it is. Particularly if you remember that the wildlife guide has lists of what birds you can find where and what they look like, so you don't need to wander the whole island looking for the last few birds like I did for a bit. You can go back after the credits roll to find any last birds you missed although there seem to be a couple of bugs in this part (two people sometimes sit at the same spot and overlap and it seemed at first like there was supposed to be an additional end sequence if you talk with your grandparents but after finding all the birds they only had regular conversation). If you like this one and are up for a challenge, try The Witness. In addition to the main puzzles you can optionally find patterns in the scenery when you are in just the right place (the trailer doesn't show that part). For me it has a wow factor that this one lacks (only partly related to the challenge I think).

Cozy Island Adventure

As the description says, this is a chill little Adventure in which you fix up the island and photograph wildlife. The goal is to get everyone else to appreciate the local fauna enough to stop a big, gaudy hotel from being built, so it's a good cause, too. You don't have to worry about being super sneaky or getting the absolute perfect snapshot, either; it's all about taking in the sights and appreciating nature, and it does that very well. On a personal note, I loved the island where it all takes place; from the vegetation to the overall palette (especially those bright red sunsets!), it reminded me of somewhere that contains the few fond memories I have from being a kid.

Cosy and relaxing

Relaxing and slow paced game that you mostly spend in the nature, on an idyllic tropical island. You can't die in the game, and it saves automatically whenever you quit, so no trouble with save points or such. No action - nothing is timed, you just walk around and pick up the camera to photograpy/identify animals, click a button to pick up trash or fix broken things, and talk to people. The only thing that can be a bit tricky is when you need to photograph flying birds - tracking them with the camera to keep them i focus when you take the picture can be a little bit challenging, but never frustrating. Story is simple - you and your friend try to save a nature reserve, and help the animals. Maybe around 5-6 hours long, and when you are done with the story you can continue to explore the island and finish all objectives (if any left) if you want to.

Kids don't like it

Let's cut to the chase: This is a game meant for kids. As a parent, I loved the game. I loved the concept, the graphics, the non-violent approach, the extremely slow pacing, 100% behind the concept. And I would love my son to play this rather than something else. Except, this game is not for me, it is for kids. So, what I think doesn't matter. Well, what do kids say? Kids say this: "What am I supposed to do? This game doesn't explain anything! Why can't I jump? Why can't I go over there? Why is there an invisible wall? This is the most boring game ever, what am I even supposed to do in this scene? Why is that girl suddenly grown up? How do I even aim with this camera? What buttons am I supposed to press? Why can't I change the buttons? What is this ****! Stupid bird watching? I can look out of the window, if I want to see birds. I can do nothing in this game!" In short: To appeal to kids, games need to approach the young players according to their age; But this game doesn't do that. Which is why, as an adult, I love it (5 stars, chef's kiss). However, I'm not the target audience. The target audience would need a lot more explanations, better controls, and a lot more action to draw them into the scenario, before the game lets them run free. And for the love of all that's sacred: Kids require the option to adjust the key bindings! Their hands are smaller. They cannot use the same keyboard layout on a full keyboard as us adults AND control a mouse at the same time. This game has no way of adjusting the keys for small hands, making it--if not entirely unplayable--a chore to play. In the end, the game is a hit with everybody except the kids it was designed for.

Character limit too low, see first line.

TITLE: A lovely game with some unfortunate choices Alba begins with organizing a protest against a hotel getting constructed. Kind of ironic that people who screwed over nature particularly badly by building low-rise houses all over the place would object to the construction of a tall hotel that would make use of space that is sacrificed much more efficiently. But... partly misguided messages about saving the environment aside, it's a really gorgeous and fun game. Nice to have a game where you can explore a beautiful world and do tasks that aren't kill A, steal B, etc. Particularly the animations are fantastic - whether it's the different walk/run animations for Alba or those for all those different animals. Despite the stylized visuals, one can really see all the love that went into creating those. Similar with the care and attention to sound design. Oh yeah, another thing that I'm not particularly fond of is the writing. I think they try too hard to make the kids seem authentic. And the grandparents too awkwardly worldly. There are of course pretentious people like that but I would've preferred it if at least those main characters weren't and they would've stuck with either English or Spanish. At least I suspect that it's Spanish - I can't read those words. And so if you buy it for your child, be prepared to get bugged about the meaning of words frequently. Or supply a Spanish translation dictionary, I guess. Still - overall, a great change of pace compared to most other games out there. And if you don't buy it for yourself but a child, I doubt that it'll notice most of the minor gripes I've described above.
