Does not meet its predecessors' standard
Many, many interesting ideas here. Also: every single thing that worked well in the previous games - those are the things they decided to change. With predictable results. Since "to hit" rolls have been taken out entirely, units in general die much, much faster than in previous AOW games. It is not unusual to see a heavy cavalry or hero unit go from full health to dead in a single round of combat from attacks by just a couple enemy units. This throws the balance of forces common in previous AOW games completely out the window. Flanking implementation: if a unit attacks on its round, it can be flank-attacked from behind or sides. So instead of counterattacking, it turns to face the unit that flank-attacked it. This in turn means that a properly orchestrated series of attacks from different directions can result in a series of flank-attacks with the attacking unit never being able to respond to any of them - a common situation: knights charge infantry, get plinked at by light crossbow unit, turn to face light crossbow unit which means they turn their backs to the infantry they're supposedly attacking, who then get to carve them up real good. In practice, the best thing with heavy cavalry is move them right up next to enemy units but not attack, only let them passively counterattack. This of course makes no sense whatsoever - but it is what the game rewards, and what the game punishes you for not doing. To put it in AOW3 terms, it's as if every unit in the earlier games had Lucky and Tireless Awareness. Effectively taking these characteristics away from (nearly) all units means they die incomparably faster, which means even a slight force advantage snowballs very quickly, and the first participant in a battle to get an advantage will capitalize very quickly. This ends up meaning that the PVE game is too easy, because a human player can typically take zero casualties in every single battle. I have never once gotten multiplayer in AOW3 to work.

Updated Nostalgia
A little premise: I've been a fan of the Age of Wonders series since the first game; I loved the Tolkien-esque and dark themes, the battle mechanics, the story, characters, music, and aesthetics; it really felt like entering a storybook! That being said: I really appreciate the updates that have been made in the series; while I still prefer the dark tone and music from the original game, there have been massive improvements and updates in battle mechanics (percentage and damage calculation being one of them), graphics, role-playing elements, and more! The best update for Age of Wonders 3, in my opinion, has been letting go of bioessential elements (i.e. your chosen race does not predetermine your moral alignment) from its predecessors, giving you more nuanced ethical choices and influencing the game mechanics as a consequence of that; I've played so many more hours by exploring that feature, and hope to see an Age of Wonders 4 in the future!

Meh?
Having tried to give this game a shot several times I must admit, it's not really in my taste. It's like a blend of several other quite absorbing games. The HoMM series, Civilization 5 with design that reminds me of Warhammer models. But the way it looks and feels... I don't know, it doesn't keep me intrigued. The gameplay is OK, I guess, but is also a bit unoriginal? It tries to be beautiful and diverse, but my eyes get tired from all the glitter and the fantasy color palette. Sorry, but this game doesn't do anything for me.
