Unfortunate

As the title says, I've played this game a lot when I was a kid. (My original disk was stolen) So when I saw it not only here but on sale, I snapped it up quick. Needless to say, I am VERY disappointed. Runs great on my PC except for 1 enormous problem. THE COPY PROTECTION IS STILL ACTIVE! Until this issue is resolved, I cannot give a higher rating for a otherwise fantastic game. GOG dropped the ball on this one. So far I have over 50 games in my library, and this is the only one with this issue. BTW, I know it is the CP causing the problems because if I try to run any configuration changes, it asks for the CD! And then I can either choose to ignore it, or exit. Both close it. Not to mention after about 5 or so minutes once the game starts running it will immediately notice no cd and crash to the desktop. Once GOG fixes this issue, will change my review accordingly.

Just blah

I can't even figure out how to get past the first mission/quest/chapter. I'm sure that's at least 80% on me, and if I put enough hours into it, I could probably figure it out. The gameplay itself is straightforward, but I'm not having any fun. I've only put a couple hours into this, and that's where it's going to stop. If I better understood what my objectives were and how to accomplish them, I might enjoy the game more. But as it is, I'm not having fun, so why bother?

Nostalgia scam

I really love Age of Wonders and I've played it for years, I was so glad to find it on Gog but this digital version crashes every few game turns without explanation. All you can do is close the error message box until it reappears seconds later then you have to force close the game from Task manager. It's so frustrating, I'd rather install the game from my old CD. The game is awesome, but not on Gog.

Wanted to like it, I don't.

I thought I'd get the whole Age of Wonders series, since I really liked the 3rd one. Please save yourself the time and money and don't try this. Unless you really have nostalgia for this type of game, it's not worth it. First, I had to go to some other website and download a mod to even start the game. Not a great start. I then finally started playing. The game doesn't look even decent (and I'm not one to complain about graphics lightly, I still play HoMM2 to this day). It really shows its age. Even in my first mission, the AI completely destroyed me on the 5th day. Wtf. At least give me some time to learn the game, jeez. The UI is really confusing and takes a long time to know what and when to press. Do yourself a favor and start with the 2nd one if you really want, at least that one looks decent.

Ridiculous Turn Based Strategy

I love turn based strategy games as much as the next guy, Heroes of Might and Magic Series has been near and dear to my heart since '96(and am wondering why IV isn't up here yet), and I've played every campaign in Disciples II Gold and love it, But Age of Wonders is ridiculously hard from the get go and I don't mean that as in I'm a lame casual gamer, cause I'm not, but a game like Wonders and HOMM need to ease you into the play so you can spend hours upon hours in the world. And there isn't a good enough tutorial at the beginning to tell you what to do. I bought the game and played it several times over the years and have always hated the unbalanced mechanics that kick off the game and most of the campaigns. Its just not all that fun to tell you the truth. Its stress inducing and cheap, which spoils it every time. If I wanted that I'd play a real time strategy game.
