I have both act of war's and high treason original discs but I have been looking for a digital edition since I have been converting my game archive from discs to online so that I can play everywhere :-) I had been looking for this since months. (Steam doesnt sale it anymore) Great job gog!
It is an awesome RTS.
Act of War was quite unique for its time when it was released in 2005 by Eugen Systems.
The story is a lot more believable, a sorta Tom Clancy's Command & Conquer as a user put it, with it taking place in a very possible near future where the oil reserves are at an all time low and the race to discover new alternate energy sources are being hampered by greedy consortiums that value money and profit over human life with the use of terrorism.
Its also quite unique with the fact that you can actually earn ingame money by not only having oil refineries but also POW camps where enemy soldiers make you money, most likely through slave labour, and through certain buildings that your infantry units can garrison, they just gotta hold the building until it runs out of the funds.
The FMV cutscenes inbetween and during missions aren't bad either, the actors do a great job and they don't come off as really cheesy or anything.
I liked it. I am a huge RTS fan and I currently try out a lot of games similar CnC, AOE, Empire Earth, Rise of Nations. Really liked the versatility of units, and that you could counter tactical weapons. That's different to CnC General for example, you can't counter Scuds. Only down-side: The AI seems a bit weak. Other than that, if you are looking for an alternative, lesser-known RTS, it's worth it.
I really really liked this game. After trying to find something similar to C&C Generals (and Zero Hours) I stumbled upon this gem. The game has a lot of nice units and mechanics, a unique economic system and good balance. It aged well but I have one biggest complaint... I could not make it work in widescreen. The resolution was locked and there was no way to remove the black columns. I do not know if this version has this issue but it is my only complaint, this game is awesome to play with friends over LAN.
This game comes as two types: the original and the expansion. I have not played C&C Generals, but I really liked the versatility of the units in this product's first game. My screen would black out for some reason launching the first game, but doing Alt + Tab twice fixed the issue. I played this game with Windows 8.1 and a decent AMD video card. I tried the fan patch on moddb.com for full-screen, but it failed horribly for some reason. I suspect the fan patch was meant for an older version not on GOG.com. Apparently, the expansion does not need the fan patch for full-screen, but I would not know for sure. I never got the expansion working.
Regardless of my trouble-shooting, the expansion, named High Treason, would never run. It would basically kill the operating system. Stuff like Caps Lock and Num Lock on the keyboard still worked, but the video driver would prove un-recoverable. There is some keyboard shortcut to quickly log out of the system, and that did work. Unfortunately, I do not remember the shortcut. I do remember something related to an "EAccess Violation" before the crashing started. Still, I consider the original game worthy of buying when on-sale.
Overall, I would give 4 stars for the game, but the bugginess causes the loss of a star. It might have had something to do with my video card driver, but compatibility is rarely an issue for me.
