This game is very interesting! It's like a cross between 1980's 8bit games and 1990's 32bit RTS classics with a Command And Conquer vibe! It's very well done, plays smooth and easy and has a pace. Very solid gameplay mechanics. Very much worth the price of admission!

I'm a casual PC gamer that would have liked this game if its unit management were better: you can do the simplest unit management (set a patrol, create groups) but you can't do things like selecting idle units -you'll find yourself scouring the map to find unused units you can send to the front a lot.
The AI is a simplistic -if you don't set a patrol, your units will passively watch other units be destroyed unless they're attacked themselves. If you think leaving a few units behind is protection, think again -only turrets actively attack enemies.
The manual is in-game which is nice, but it doesn't cover everything the game can do; there's a tutorial.
There's no story or characters, and just a single faction with 25 missions; other factions are available as DLC. Althought they do their best to vary it, the lack of story and characters, with the irrelevance of strategy, means you'll get bored quickly.
I never multiplay so I couldn't test, but other reviews mention lack of multiplay support (there's a multiplay menu, btw); I did notice that when creating a LAN game it took my username from GOG Galaxy, so I'm thinking multiplayer requires GOG Galaxy and probably you can't crossplay, which happens on other GOG games. A pity, since multiplay is the only reason I'd recommend this. It would also break the "No DRM" GOG promise. If you tested multiplay, please be specific on your review on the problems you had (or didn't have).
Other than refineries, that create money out of oil, it doesn't matter where you build. Building turrets enlarges your territory, which allows you to build refineries nearer the neutral oil fields that are the only resource in the game. As for strategy, just make lots of units and bring them on. I bought this on sale and got a few hours out of it, so I don't regret my purchase, but after six or so missions I uninstalled. Frankly, I stopped caring as soon as I thought I had enough for a review.
Cool thing: vehicles can crush infantry.
