It's not removed, you can get still the Director's Cut version from 2008, and the extras to this include the original version.
haldrie Sadly it comes down to a licensing issue. Often the company that makes the remaster is no longer the same company that made the original and does not wish to continue to grant the rights to sell the original forcing GOG to remove it from future sale. Games that were purchased as the original however should not be forcably replaced with the remaster as was the case with Saint's Row IV. I'm just lucky I still have the offline installer for the original version but if I loose it I'm out of luck as I can't redownload it from GOG anymore.

Mothrog I'll go a step above, I think we should be able to download the contents as they existed on the original floppy or CD. Just provide a disclaimer that it's for advanced user's only and GOG cannot guarantee the functionality or performance levels as it'll be up to the customer to configure the game to work on their machine. But if you know what you are doing it shouldn't be a problem. I've always extracted the game data and configured things to my liking anyway!

My list of games still lists the old plain games.
I assume that the old games are still available but only when NOT replaced by the new versions.
Suggested solution for GOG: Add remastered versions, don't replace old versions. Thus both versions could coexist.

polysquirrel I think this is unrealistic in that copyright holders who developed or licences a remaster want you to buy the remaster, not the original. However, a policy of always including the original with the remaster (what you already do, just maybe make it a rule) is certainly great.

Some 'remasters' are admittedly just a shoddy excuse to charge extra, but a number of them are clearly made faithfully, with care and in good faith and are probably a value proposition to a greater number of players, even if not for me.

I was just looking at the Bard's Tale situation for eg, and I bought the trilogy version thinking that's the original or comes with the original, as no separate listing for the dos games of old is otherwise available. But NOPE! The original trilogy is available actually, but its bundled with the 2004 bard's tale ARPG instead! You have to know it, as otherwise that's impossible to search for, like why would you look for it under a clearly separate game?
And to make matters more absurd, apparently those who wanted that 2004 rpg had the original version of THAT pulled, and just outright replaced with a remaster of it completely, with no way to get the unmodified version anymore. Just a complete clusterf*.
Presumably GoG can require more permanent contractual arrangements to allow listings on their own site, and the company would want the access to the community with a high proportion of retro gamers if they have a rich back catalogue, so I don't buy it that GoG is powerless here, or any more powerless than when it insists on having the titles be DRM-free to be listed.

Unfortunately remastered games dont work with wine/proton, but old version for XP works. Adding the old mirror would allow Linux players to bypass the compatibility issue in most cases without any additional work.

I sure as $&^% don't want the new Saint's Row trash remasters, they worked fine before and now they don't, or over on Steam the mess they made of Borderlands by "updating" the old ones with their network fail from the remasters instead of just letting decade old games keep working properly.

reallynonessential As I understand it, some game versions are pulled due to decisions by legal owners of the rights to the game. I'm not sure how this problem can be fixed, hopefully preservation of older games in the original versions can be negotiated to continue unimpeded by developers or any parties that buy the rights to a game. There are more than a few good old games not on this site (or anywhere else) because the owners of the rights to the game essentially don't allow the game to be published in any form at all.

Sometimes the remake is not as good or the art direction changes too drastically, even removing features that they thought most would not notice.
The remake of Dead Rising is not what I'm eluding to, but that is also a great example. Dead Island Definitive changes the look and feel of the original Dead Island in such a way that I would find key resellers if it is no longer available, and members on the forum ask on Every Single Remaster the same question: Are The Originals Included If I Buy The Definitive Bundle? It's not just for Graphics Comparisons on YouTube, people genuinely want to play the originals too, also because their system is older and they can't play a less optimized definitive HD version, or they are locked out completely due to their OS to boot.
We are not only asking you to please include the original releases, but declaring that you absolutely have to, that it is an obligation.

TestGirlFan +5000 users seem to not understand how things work. GOG sells/provides/hosts games, but that doesn't mean they own the rights of them. If the copyright holders want to remove the games, GOG has absolutely no say on the matter. They can try to convince them but if they can't, they have to remove them. No contract can avoid that (because, if GOG shos a "we will have full control of the game, so you won't remove a game from this store" clausule, no publisher will want to sell atheir games here). People just love to vote unreasonable wishes, like the ones wishing for GOG to port old console exclusive games...

Too easy to say that GOG doesn't have any influence on it, cause they have. Those publishers can say what they want, but they signed an agreement with GOG that their games may be sold on GOG. It would mean breaking the agreement if they demand that it has to be pulled off. GOG can then just hold them to the agreement. So it is GOG who pulls it from the store.
