Provide Original Files and/or Disk Images with GOG Purchase
Yeah!!
I have an i486DX4 and a MMX 233 MHz pentium, I would love to be able to play DOS and Windows 95/98 games in their original versions
thank you so much!!
This is much needed. Having a separate Windows machine only to unzip GOG games is painful for someone who does not need any Windows computers.
Yes! Please! It's not difficult at all - I about to drop GOG and go full-pirate because is such a pain trying to run Win98 games in a real hardware
Please do this. I would like to play the games on older hardware.
This feature is really needed, I use GOG to get clean archive of games, however if one day I decide to install those games on old hardware it will be a pain, having the original disk, along with the original patch will truly be amazing!
I want to have this possibility because I don't know the future, and when I see a remake of the door of baldur and others, making it impossible to find originals ... that's a problem. I am lucky to have bought it and made a backup from the beginning and never used the cd. Without that, I could not play with the originals.
Actually it would be adding the original copy protected disk image and a cracked version that bypassed the protection or manual protection running a patch/crack file to alter the original file. That would be the best situation. This is how I usually store my older copy protected games. One copy with the copy protection intact and one where the files have been cracked. Also this can apply to optical discs as well.
I can't fathom why haven't GOG already fulfilled this wish. This is one of those low hanging fruits on the community wishlist for them.
They should already have the install disks for all of the games they are selling. Fulfilling this wish would be as easy as copying the images to their servers and pointing a download link to them. For none of the Good Old Games would the files ever change again so they wouldn't require any further maintenance either.
It's more than a bit ironic that we can't play these games on the retro machines that they were originally developed and released for.
I personally would rather love to see this wish fulfilled than the integration of yet another social media or digital game retailer account to the Galaxy client.
I also support this. I'm restoring my first PC I built for Windows 98, and I luckily have most of my original games. It would be awesome for my GOG games to be able to download the original game with any key requirement removed. Games that have CD audio would need an ISO. This issue becomes an even bigger issue for the XP era and games I bought on Steam. I have an Athlon XP, which doesn't support SSE2, and even though I'm able to get an old version of Steam to run on XP, the version of Half Life 2 you get now isn't the one release back in 2004 or the Orange Box, etc. I know Valve will likely not ever add Half Life titles here, but here's to me dreaming.
I certainly wouldn't be upset to see a Legacy folder with the games.
I support this. I bought Tomb Raider from GOG to play it on a real 3dfx Voodoo and I got a crappy download that I had to modify to install it on a real PC. And after that I still had no CD audio. Original ISOs will ensure my future purchases.
This would be wonderful. I'd actually like to see the low-level images featuring the copy protection. Provide them "as-is".
I wish I could vote this more than once.
I'd buy that for a dollar! I have prepared a few retro gaming PCs for me to play older games with my kids. procuring game media is becoming harder and harder as time goes on. I'd love it if I could get some of the games from my list here as actual playable titles on the actual hardware I have.
aprils fools day issue ?
Please this would be incredible for us with old machines
Unsure if this will actually be a thing, but I 100% support it. Would be a miracle if it does!
This is a really neat idea and I support it fully. That being said it's pretty niche and I doubt it will be implemented.
One consideration for floppies is that almost all of them were of course copy-protected, so any standard disk images would not do. You would have to use a device like the Kryoflux to make a low-level image of the floppy. You end up with some 40 MB of data for an old 360 kB disk. And then anyone that wanted to copy that data to a real physical floppy to play in a computer would also need to have a similar device to low-level write the data properly so you end up with an identical copy of the floppy including all non-standard broken sectors and stuff that the copy-protection relies on. Or you can cheat of course and patch away the copy protection first and distribute cracked binaries, but that would take away a bit of the point of having original images in the first place since you could instead just copy the dosbox-files already included in GoG games to floppies to play.
By far the most useful wishlist request. Ever.
So much this. Restoring and building old, period-correct computers to play good old games on is getting very popular, a revival GOG itself has helped spark. While it's possible to manually port many GOG releases over to original old hardware, it can be both time consuming and unreliable. It would be absolutely amazing to have proper support, straight from GOG, for installing your releases on legacy systems.
Yes please, include the original floppy’s or CD-ROM
Yes, please add the original disc images! Floppy and/or CD
This please, very useful for getting legit versions of these old games for actual release era hardware.
Yes, great idea! I love playing these on the original hardware. Would be awesome to include the original ISO or Floppy disk image files as bonus downloads, I'd buy far more games of this was available
This is a great idea. I know I would be more inclined to purchase old games here IF I could get access to the original unaltered installs for use on old hardware.
For people like me that play on the original hardware it would be pretty useful cause i wouldn't need to unpack and re-do the windows 98 era games, and it would be way easier for me to have the floppy images to install directly on msdos
This would be a good thing, even if it's "disk" images, e.g. .iso, .bin, .zip of each disk that can be easily distributed electronically.
hmm good idea for retro gaming ;)
A million times yes.
