Physical distribution option
to powinno być zdecydwanie.
I'm jealous of indie releases on Limited Run not having a physical option for PC games. I really don't want a steam code, I want an actual media eith the game on it. I hope GoG looks into this. Physical game collecting is the lrimary acenue for people concerned about games preservation and collecting games. It could be a nice collectible with box art or even manual. I don't care if they charge full price, the physical release is a nice luxury collectible.
I keep thinking about this. It really p*ss*s me off the current situation of PC games against console platforms. Any argument about convenience is just POV. The truth is that many people still desire to own a good, reliable physical library, without having to do that by themselves, we just want a product. I guess most of them jump into consoles as PC seems an hostile environment for that people.
The success of IndieBox is evidence that some people would love to add-on a published USB key of the game. Having it all in one place like gog.com makes sense.
For older big box games I don't see the point, you can probably find one on eBay that will be better than anything GOG could ever produce. I wouldn't mind seeing this for new indie titles though.
Starmaker, not everybody wants a collector edition full of goodies. A digipack with a manual and a disk (and eventually a poster or few postal cards) would make me very happy. Unfortunately, you do get a point : people ready to pay more for a physical copy may be rare, especially if it doesn't have enough added value.
I do appreciate the desire for physical distribution from a consumer side, however with respect to GOG I have two caveats.
1: With GoGs size, physical location, the cost of logistics for physical items to be shipped around the world, there is no practical incentive for GOG to do this when the cost of such an option would likely cripple or even kill the company. (Remember, this is the same reason why Kickstarters with a lot of physical rewards for support often end up squandering their kickstart funding handling the staggering costs of those rewards. )
In fact, If you do a physical distribution, then for GoGs own economic
welfare, buying a physical copy cannot also impart a digital copy, or else the price for both would have to be higher to help offset the cost of production and logistics.
2: I think GOG offering such an option would be both impractical to them and redundant to users because for the most part GOG already gives their consumers almost everything one needs to produce their own physical copy. Simply burn only one game to disc, Bonus content to disc, Get a cheap CD jewel case, print out any manuals included and any packaging / cover images from extras (or worst case simply look up any image of the original box art and print it out).
Then for all intents you have a pretty reasonable "physical" distribution that you can fulfill that desire for physical arrangement and doesnt have to kill GOG or consumers financially to do it.
Honestly, I think if they do any physical distribution at all, the most they should do would be restricted to proprietary intellectual properties, and potentially true abandonware and freeware that does not conflict with the CW holders intention for the property. Trying to do physical distribution for third party content opens an incredibly complex can of worms and is doubtfully worth the effort.

Would be really cool to see some sort of limited run done like Gaijinworks did with their Class of Heroes II release for PSP this past month. This way GOG could make some money, spread the word, and allow for physical copies straight from the source that contain the extras for those who wish to own a physical version of their favourite game. LIke System Shock 2.
You got my vote as well I wish they did this too, I'm a collector or at least I become one a few years ago unfortunately some of my older games are in bad shapes, some I have lost, I really want to renew and fix my collection.
I want to have shells with boxed games..
It would be cool that any physical boxed game purchased you would get a digital game/backup.
i do. yet, its still worth a try
Do you realize how much hassle it is and what would be the operating expenses of such an enterprise? Do you realize how much a fricking digipak costs, not to mention the artbook and other goodies? People here are used to buying games for six bucks and still want more promos, good luck finding 1000 people (this used to be the minimum # or copies back when I worked in CD publishing) ready to shell out $200 for a deluxe edition. Consider that 10000 people wished for Grim Fandango during the whole time the wishlist existed. To make a deluxe box, 10% of them need to pay $200 within, say, 2 months.
