An absolute priority for sure! The possiblity to see japanese games on GOG from Bandai Namco (Dark Souls, Tales of, Naruto Shippuden series, Tekken 7, Soul Calibur VI, Namco Arcade, etc) to Koei Tecmo (Nioh, Dynasty Warriors, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden series, etc) to Square Enix JA (Final Fantasy, NieR, Mana, Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, etc) to SEGA (Yakuza, Sonic, Persona series, Bayonetta, Sega Megadrive Classics, etc) & Capcom (Resident Evil, Devil May Cry Monster Hunter, Mega Man series, etc) would be amazing. There has to be some way of convincing them all it's worth supporting stores like this.

That was a joke of course. I don't assume all japanese games are the same, No no. I did hear many people tell me that there are many great games that only come out in japan because translating them isn't very easy, or something? I don't know but I keep hearing we're missing out on many very good quality games and I would love to play some new things I never played before!

I enjoyed the recent Japanese sale and bought some of the VNs that had been on my Steam wishlist (At full price they are, unfortunately, more expensive here on GOG, so the discount technically wasn't as big as advertised, though. ) Yay Gog-chan!

Anyway, increasing those options would be awesome!

Please GOG. Its not fair that all of my favorite games are DRM only on other stores. It'd be awesome to be able to get things like Senran Kagura DRM free.

Including (fully!) Japanese language versions, please.

I purchased Trails in the Sky anyway to show my support, but it annoys me exactly as much as those German games without German versions.

I would love to see more games from Japan on this website, whether they are old or new. This is one thing that very few stores geared towards Western consumers have, and I think it's a shame, because the Japanese often develop games that are very different from ones made by Western developers, but we have to buy overpriced consoles to play most of them. Of course, many games are console-exclusive, because that's how the market is geared in Japan, but it would be great for GOG to allow us to explore what Japanese PCs had to offer, and if not the famous titles, hopefully, they could at least offer games that offered similar experiences and with reasonable quality.

Bringing Japanese PC gaming to Western players through GOG should happen, but it will require important preparations to have a good first impression and follow-through. Before doing anything else, CD Projekt should contact D4 Enterprises for collaboration or advice. Their main service, Project EGG, is built around a luncher that can boot multiple releases from multiple PC models for varying Windows OSes. Even now, though, the coverage of OS compatibility leaves something to be desired, hinting that emulator standalone building itself is a rough task.

Most gamers give up trying to play Japanese PC games because the emulation of these old PCs isn't as well-documented or simply as easy as it is with DOSBox and SheepShaver. Tokugawa Corp. is still the best resource anyone has for getting Neko Project II, the de facto NEC PC-98 emulator, to work on their OS and PC build. Many games have to be booted from disk images, which isn't a user-friendly process, unlike how I could simply path a directory in DOSBox and launch executables with ease. Many of the better Japanese PC releases have been ported to early Windows OSes (95/98/NT, usually), but these are far and few in-between, and most of the work needs to be done with emulator standalones dedicated to each of the many Japanese PC systems.

On top of all this, a translation team needs to hack the image files to alter text, change graphics, and perform the adjacent steps for localization. I can gather from hearsay that this also takes a bit more time than is normal for DOS releases and earlier. GOG's currently employing translators for the Western market, meaning most new language patches don't include Japanese/Chinese/Korean versions. Not that I'm advocating the whole breadth of GOG's classic catalogue receive new Japanese translations, as are audience likely doesn't include Japanese gamers, but hiring the right translators to work on Japanese PC games is practically required for some games, especially visual novels and adventure titles that are all very common. I'm not sure if commissioning fan translators is practical or even legal, but there are at least a few groups/individuals out in the Web wilderness who would gladly take a crack at modifying these games' text and, perhaps, uncensoring where a Western localizer would. On that note, the abundance of eroge and adult content in many games could disqualify them from getting on GOG in the first place, especially if certain games were meant only to deliver pornography back in a time when digital file sharing was based around physical media and publishing.

The best course of action would be to draw up licensing/distribution agreements with the IP/copyright owners of games already localized for Western audiences. Games ranging from Thexder to Princess Maker 2 were brought from Japan to the United States as an alternative mode of third-party support and economic trade (many Japanese publishers ported Western games to their own systems). These could easily be released to trial balloon the native GOG audience for Japanese PC games. After this initial wave, the easiest games to localize would be shooters, platformers, action-genre titles, puzzlers, some simulators (A-Train was localized once, it should be a cinch again), and anything not designed with a dependency on Japanese text. Anything goes so long as there's a community to support it. There are enough parallels between Western and Eastern PC games that everyone will find something to enjoy.

The rule here is to do things right, so that the site and its customers can raise awareness of these great, fascinating game libraries. Two extra steps would be to include all versions of a game built for multiple PCs and to include the matching soundtracks (which EGG Music already provides in remastered quality editions for its customers). Treasuring these games in conjunction with first-time localization gives off a strong impression that someone's interested in the games on an artistic basis. Proper marketing could reveal the strengths that Japanese PC games have over their Western counterparts, such as more brilliant visuals and screen resolution tech, or impressive mastery of FM synthesis engineering and MIDI compatibility. A game as varied and ambitious as Star Cruiser (https://polsy.org.uk/play/nico/?vidid=sm10117263) can be as visible as something more focused and genre-based like Kagirinaki Tatakai (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/kagiri/kagiri.htm). Visual novels from prolific companies like C's Ware should share the spotlight with Artdink's vast catalogue of homegrown sims and CRPGS. How about Atlus and Falcom bringing their wares to GOG, or maybe the collected output of Square and Enix, the latter company having kickstarted Japanese PC game development nearly from its inception? If we make our voice heard as customers, and if GOG can negotiate the distribution agreements to begin with, Japanese companies responsible for these older titles will see demand and reciprocate accordingly.

Above all, I trust that GOG's the best online distributor to handle this long-term project, since their interest in DRM-free, well-curated game releases matters the most for Japanese PC games coming into our community. Every gamer should have the chance to blast synth chiptunes out their speakers, marvel at the screen dithering giving these games their distinctive look, and enjoy principled game design if they so desire.

More variety is always good. Gog should consider this an untapped market, not like steam is selling a lot of old japanese products.

I think it would be great to get more JRPGs and games like Metal Gear Solid on here. Along with any other old releases that managed to get PC versions (games from Japan generally don't get PC versions).

It would also be great to have more Visual Novels sold here. There are a fair amount of indie devs out there now working on Visual Novel type games, and even the Visual Novels which happen to have mature or adult content would go hand in hand with another wishlist feature people want, which is a section for mature/adult games (and uncensored versions of games). The userbase for GOG tends to be on the older side anyway compared to the userbase of most sites, so I doubt many people would object to having a section with mature rated games that weren't censored versions.

All in all, I'd love to see more Visual Novels make it to GOG, especially seeing as GOG already has To The Moon available for purchase and that game seems to be doing pretty well here, and they've released a fair amount of adventure games from indie developers as well. With plenty of dev tools available out there like the Ren'Py engine for Visual Novels and Adventure Game Studio for adventure games I think GOG would make a great home for these kinds of games (and DRM free too, unlike Steam).
