License the Roland MT-32 ROM files or use Adlib sound when possible.

Some GOG releases of games (like Wing Commander 1+2 and some of the Ultima games) have been pre-configured to use Roland MT-32 sound, despite Dosbox' lack of proper support for that card, as emulating it relies on acquiring ROM files with waveforms and patches from an actual MT-32, which can't be distributed without a license, thus most games trying to use it in Dosbox sound horrible (and generally the sound setup program to change to Adlib sound is not included in GOG releases). So, please, either find a way to legally get good MT-32 playback, or stick to the other standard sound card of the era, while MT-32 is technically superior for the games designed to use it - the emulation falls flat without the proper ROM files, and then the more easily and correctly emulated Adlib FM synthesis is preferable.

Yup, would like to add my support for this request - the MT-32 ROMs make a huge difference. They can be obtained off the internet illegally and when used with other DOSBOX type programs make a massive difference. if GOG could license them somehow, it would be awesome.

Sierra games are fairly easy to switch to a different mode by just modifying the resource.cfg file and changing the sound drv.

At which point you can choose adlib, audblast, mt32, depending on your needs, and supported equipment.

It should look like this (and all you need to change is the audiodrv section);

videoDrv = VGA320.DRV
soundDrv = GENMIDI.DRV
audioDrv = AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = ARM.DRV
minHunk = 223k

I'm a fan of the Sierra games that have great MT-32 soundtracks, disappointed that GOG's packages are preconfigured to use General Midi.

It would be in GOG's best interests to actively support projects like Munt (the MT-32 emulator that can plug into scummvm/dosbox), whether they license the ROMs, get Roland to release them under a public license, or help recreate them accurately.

Not holding my breath, but it would be nice :). There's a few examples of Munt vs. a real MT-32 here, not sure how old the Munt version is though: sierrahelp.com/Utilities/Emulators/Munt.html

I just checked, and it looks like Id Software/Bethesda Softworks licensed the GUS ROM's for their 360/PS3 ports of Doom, and the recent Doom 3 BFG Edition, so it certainly looks like something that can and have been done.

Great suggestion. This might actually be feasible in the same way that the Sony PSX ROM image is available on Google Play in order to be able to use a PSX emulator sold there. If GoG sells the MT32/ CML32 ROM images as a separate package, GoG would have another edge over DRM'ed digital download sites on top of the DRM-free advantage. Roland stands nothing to loose, as those ROMs are already wildly pirated. In the ultimate event (you can dream, can't you ;-) ) this might even lead to Roland producing a MT32/ LAPC-1/SC88 *hardware* compatible soundcard suitable for modern day PC's with an optional break-out box to provide MIDI/ Cinch sockets along with the famous LED display. Now *that* would really be bliss, because the emulators, how good they may be don't sound as crisp as the real thing.
