Don't base site language on IP adress
yup, user agent language
yeah, even heard of changing an IP to stay hidden?
Simply use the "Accept-Language" HTTP header !
It's just annoying to change language everytime i go on gog.com (I live in the french part of Swtzerland and gog is always in German by default)
Even if you can change the language. But to base it off of your IP address instead of the browser setting, kinda feels invasive and condescending.
HTTP provides preferred language header, why is it ignored everywhere? Browsers have language settings specifically to instruct web sites which language to server the content in. IP can be, with a questionable level of accuracy, used to detect geographic location, but certainly not the language of the visitor.
Yes, I have to completely agree with this one. Despite the fact that english language is not my native langauge, I find it very fun to use and practice. With this, many people from around the world can easily practice their english skills by getting used to the language here, or at least they can choose other languages that they feel most comfortable with if the site language were to be made optional.
I live in Russia and Russian is the only fluent language I can use. However since my childhood I prefer English in all software from Widows interface to video games. I remember the times when Microsoft sucked all my money for Professional/Ultimate versions because only such versions provided option for English language in my country. That is the very reason why I stop using EA Origin client, because it forced me to play games in Russia; even multinational Steam have a few Russian-only games in stock for CIS citizens.
What the hell GOG? Why do I have to see outrageous Russian translated webpage each time I get into your site? Yeap, Russian translation could be far more better than this. But who cares, just let me see common English and option to change it later, not vice versa!
voted, i just saw this link
english as a default would seem best i guess, cause even with the minimum of english users can switch to the language they prefer, assumin the language is avaialble, like french and german are and russian
Please GOG, just respect the preferred language set in the browser as the default. That's what every sane website does.
Discriminating against IP addresses is plain evil, whether it is used to block you out or whether it is intended "to enhance your experience". This stuff kills the internet.
No, not the browser content-language-whatever setting, please. Or just as a default value that can be changed by the user on the site.
And of course by Content-Language I meant Accept-Language.
Dear GOG, for crying out loud, respect Content-Language. My browser is already telling you what languages I prefer so why are you try to be "smart"? Basing language on IP should be the last resort only.
At the bottom of the page you can change both currency and language.
Sorry, found the language option on main page, and it is set to English, but my point still stands, I shouldn't be seeing duplicated info in French language that I have to scan, process, and then ignore on each page when I look at games, it might not annoy everyone but it hurts my poor brain ;p
e.g.
Don't miss 700+ games up to 90% off, daily bundle deals, and flash sales on GOG.com 2014 DRM-Free Big Fall Sale!
Bundles exceptionnels, ventes flash et 700+ jeux jusqu'à - 90% - Promo d'automne 2014 sans DRM sur GOG.com !
I can't see anywhere to change language, can anyone help me pinpoint it?
I'm seeing English *and* French on most product descriptions and it's incredibly annoying - there shouldn't be any unnecessary text for users to have to parse on a page, very poor UI design.
Give me option for one language or the other, don't display pointless duplicated info in multiple languages..... *rolls eyes*
Nevermind, I found it. You can change language close to the bottom right of the page, next to the currency. For some reason I had thought this would be an account setting like the country setting.
I also cannot see any solution. I can change country but not language, as far as I can see. The language is based on my IP and not on the country I choose so that is no help and I would want to be able to set the two independently anyhow.
could you please share the solution? I live in France and the fact having this website in French annoys me so much I'm actually considering quiting it...
There's actually an option to change language on the site. Ignore this.
