Grim Fandango Original Version
The original is playable via ScummVM, and ScummVM is available for a lot of different platforms. By now, the ResidualVM stuff is being merged into the main ScummVM project, and this game shows up as working at this time in the compatibility list on the project website. Why not have the original available?
Correction: Where I said year 4, I meant the factory island in, I believe, year 3.
Still insisting on the original. Apparently, in the "remaster", the characters who smoke do so through their skulls! That's one nasty bug (see my other comment for some of the other known issues plaguing the remastered game. Note: You can trigger the conversation with Domino in year 4 if you play in ResidualVM so here's yet another reason to go back to the original).
I'm passionate about art and the availability of original versions, so I'll be eagerly awaiting the one for Grim.
Remake... man do I hate this word. Original, compatible with modern systems - now that sounds much better
I wish that they would include the original version with the remaster as an added bonus, sort of like with System Shock
GOG is being more careful about not completing entries that aren't actually here (for instance, Day of the Tentacle isn't completed since the original isn't here), so you should feel safe voting.
I couldn't care less about the remastered version either. That isn't what I played when I was 10 or 12, and that isn't what I've wanted to play again since then.
I never voted for the remastered version, and yet apparently I did. I suspect my vote got changed over to it. Naughty!
@SHODANFreeman Yeah. I ended up eBaying Monkey Island Madness (1 and on a single CD from one of the LucasArts Archives packs) and I only picked up the remastered version of #1 during the insomnia sale because of the Ultimate Talkie Edition Builder scripts.
It's lame that they renamed the request for the original version just so they could mark it complete on their list. The request they've marked complete was for the original version, not the remaster. Same with Monkey Island.
I just won an eBay auction for original Grim Fandango discs but I'd still be willing to pay for GOG convenience if one of the following two cases were to come about:
1. GOG offering a ResidualVM-based original Grim Fandango release similar to how they offer both the original and remade versions of Wings.
2. GOG offering the original data files as an extra with the remastered version for users who prefer ResidualVM (if it's a contractual restriction similar to Alone in the Dark).
(The remastered version will probably never be offered for niche non-Android ARM Linux devices like my OpenPandora where ResidualVM runs fine.)
Having this wish here is not completely silly: so far the remaster has bugs the original didn't have (water animations not looping correctly, the cat race announcer suddenly stops talking, the conveyor belt not being visible sometimes, missing mouse hotspots). Though Double Fine apparently isn't done patching, the remaster regrettably already has one bug they said they won't be able to fix: when the characters talk underwater their voices are without reverberation as opposed to in the original.
On the other hand, the pretty serious bug where you can't talk to Domino in his office in Year 3 is only fixed in the remaster...
I have to insist on the original version. The remastered one is just not acceptable as far as I'm concerned (because reasons; I don't expect or need YOU to understand).
As the original is totally broken on today's systems, I do not think it is a good idea.
Remastered is quite fine.
Remastered can play and look as the original if you choose to, this is completely silly.
Whether or not the original comes, at least let people vote for it.
The remastered versión came to be in part thanks to Sony and the PS4, but you will not see me complaining , bought it day one, loving it
To be fair, it's impossible to say how many of the 46981 people who voted for 'Grim Fandango' are going to be more than happy with the HD remaster and how any are going to insist on the original, personally I think most are going to be in the former camp so I think that having a separate entry in the wishlist is the most fair and democratic way forward, yeah its a shame that GOG aren't able to include the original as an extra, though and if GOG get rid of THIS wish (or mark it complete) I WILL be sympathetically upset!
@scarfy: The original works with ResidualVM which a sister project to ScummVM.
(Same guys. ScummVM reimplements SCUMM and ResidualVM reimplements GrimE)
ResidualVM lets the original Grim Fandango run on modern PCs and it also runs in places the remastered version won't, like PowerPC-based macs, Android, FreeBSD, AmigaOS, and my OpenPandora (an ARM-based device running non-Android Linux).
It should also be possible to compile the OpenPandora ResidualVM port for Raspberry Pi if anyone wants that.
Absolutely agree. Godawful computer, just about to make a thread for it. I have a Pentium Dual-Core 3.06GHz with 2GB of RAM and an Intel Q45/Q43 Express Chipset. There's no damn way I'm going to run the remastered edition.
@gamefood you wouldn't be able to run the original grim on this hardware. You can't start grim on a system with multithreading or mulitple cpus. crashes right away. Source: i own the original cds.
unrelated to this i don't understand the problem some seem to have with the remastered. the only thing is that they updated it to be able to run on modern systems with rendering enhancments you can turn of... so... i for one really can't wait for the remastered version even if i already own the original.
Glad to see this was made. Although I won't vote for it, I'm not a fan of GOG tampering with the wishlist.
Never played it, but want to. But don't have Vista or later, a Duo Core, 4 GBs of RAM and an OpenGL 3.3 supporting 512MB graphic card...
Won't buy a new PC only to run a couple of OLD games, soo....
Not to forget I NEVER voted for the REMASTERED GF, and I absolutely dislike how gog.com handled this point.
@AlexRD I'm talking about the facts. You're talking about a fantasy scenario that sounds wonderful but has no basis in reality. The original, unchanged version is not present in this new edition. That information is abundantly available in many, many locations across the internet and here on GOG. And as I've said before, it's not simply a remastered version because no matter how you decide to play, it always has new music. A remaster does not add or remove content. A remake or special edition does.
Alexrd don't spread misinformation. It was already explained in the gog post that there is no original version included in this release. It only allows people to switch to a kind of retro throwback which does not include the whole original content. Read gog's post again if you don't know what you are talking about.
@Eli: What are you talking about? Educate yourself instead of misleading others with wrong information. There is no remake whatsoever, it's a remaster. The re-recorded music, high-res textures and real-time lighting are all part of the remastered version. The original, unchanged version remains there as an alternative to those that prefer it. All you need to do is press a button and it will switch between one version and the other. Again, this request is useless since it's already fulfilled by this re-release.
As I've repeatedly said, that is NOT the original version. It is another remake with as-yet-unknown changes to the original game. One thing we know for certain is that it will still include completely new music. What we do not know for certain are the extent of the other artistic changes that will remain. And the primary version remains not a remaster, but a remake, despite its highly deceptive & incorrect title.
@Eli: It does include the original version. You can switch between the original and the remaster at the push of a button.
I want the original to run outstandingly on modern OSes, with higher-fidelity audio and 32-bit textures that do not modify the visible color information of the original images. That would be a proper remaster.
I think they should include the original just for the lolz. I'm even happy with an ISO of an original disc since I don't own it. I'll make it run myself if I would...
Why would you want the original? It doesn't even run on modern OSes.
It definitely does not include the original version. Without any shadow of a doubt whatsoever, we know with 100% certainty that the new remade version does not include the original Grim Fandango. It includes a remade version of Grim Fandango, and an even more remade version of Grim Fandango.
Grim Fandango Remastered includes the original version. This is an useless request.
Voted, because GOG should not close a wish for a game that is not the same as the game wished for. I have played this game on a Win98SE machine sitting in front of a 17" CRT and listening to the great game music playing on my stereo. I will cherish my orginal copy and the CD images made from those CD's. At least I will be able to play the original on my future DragonBox Pyra, running ResidualVM (on ARM no less) ...
@topfgun: election fraud? Hmm, maybe we'll eventually get Fallout 3 on GOG :-P
Anybody who want's gog to stop manipulating the wishlist and remake wishes on the wishlist can vote here: www.gog.com/wishlist/site/gog_stop_manipulating_community_wishlist
I'm more concerned with the way that GOG sneakily manipulated the entries and made votes count towards a wish that was not supported by a good number of voters.
How can one trust the Wishlist system and GOG anymore?
I also want the original version of Grim Fandango. I won't buy the remastered version.
I agree with bringing the original version. What about people who don't (and I underline that don't) have 4 GBs of RAM???
We´re gonna have the remastered edition, that´s fine to me but hope that some day they release the OV for the ones that want it.
election fraud !
Well we all voted for the original. Gog just decided that they all counted as remastered version votes making any gog wish basically pointless if it can be manipulated like that.
This version HAD over 46,000 votes. Strange how they all disappeared and went to the remastered version. Stranger still that I never voted for that one.
