The Gallic War was made by Infogrames (pre-Atari) in 2000.
It is a very interesting mix of strategy and platforming, as both are key elements and equally fun in their own way.

What's special about it is how much diversity it offers - and I mean a good kind of diversity (not the 1,000,000+ items, enemies, characters, etc. one).

The story is that Getafix the druid needs some additional ingredients for a special magic potion, that are scattered all over Gaul.
The main game happens on a map that resembles Gaul (please see asterix.openscroll.org/images/world.gif as a reference), where you have to fight off the Romans.
Gaul is divided into a bunch of provinces, some of which are cities.
At the start of the game you only have one province, The Gallic Village, from where on out you have to take over all the other provinces to lastly travel to rome in order to defeat the Romans.

Every time you attack a city, you will have to enter a jump'n'run-like part, where you have to fight off Romans, collect coins and gather magic potions in order to make it through the level without dying.
At the end of each level there is one of the ingredients.

There are also some minigames in certain provinces.

The best things about the game in my opinion are gameplay and soundtrack -- love the soundtrack.

Have a short insight into the game here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ewp4or0nSY .

Would be amazing if GoG can made Asterix: The Gallic War (in german: Asterix: Streit um Gallien) to run on modern Systems and would pay 20€ or more for it and i think much other too, cause its really the best game of any Asterix game Series!
If you do please in german language too!
Love GoG anyway cause they bring Star Wars Pod racer back to life.
