Reduce memory and CPU usage in progress

The GOG Galaxy Client and another process called the GOGGalaxyHelper appear to be using almost 0.5 GB of memory while downloading a game. Furthermore, on an older Intel Core 2 Duo computer, it appears to be using almost 50% of the total CPU during a download.

Just to add to the discussion: I noticed my new laptop's fans going insane and its battery being drained like nothing I have seen so far, and the problem turned out to be the CPU usage of the Galaxy client. <br /> <br /> The two issues that I could detect with Task Manager are the two that have already been mentioned: CPU usage and RAM usage. Two things really make a difference with the CPU: whether you're downloading something or not, and whether Galaxy is minimized or not. <br /> <br /> I decided to see what's up on both my desktop and my laptop. The results, according to Task Manager: <br /> <br /> Desktop: <br /> -CPU: Galaxy uses 10-15% of my CPU (i5 6400) when downloading and not minimized, 5% when downloading and minimized, and basically nothing when not downloading (minimized or not) <br /> -RAM: Galaxy uses some 160 MB of RAM when downloading or not downloading, minimized or not <br /> <br /> Laptop: <br /> -CPU: Galaxy uses 60-70%(!) of my CPU (i5 7200U) when downloading and not minimized, minimizing changes it to 2-5%. Pausing the download while keeping the Client maximized made it bounce between 15% and 50%, eventually settling at 15%. Minimizing reduces it to basically nothing. <br /> -RAM: Galaxy uses some 200 MB of RAM when downloading, minimized or not. Stopping the download weirdly needed about 30 MB more RAM. <br /> <br /> The big offenders when it comes to CPU usage are the app GOG Galaxy (32 bit) and two background processes that share a name, GalaxyClient Helper Application (32 bit). There's a third of these that doesn't use the CPU but does use up some RAM. <br /> <br /> It seems to me that the RAM usage is mostly fine, though that's probably because I have the luxury of having 8 GB of RAM on both machines. But the CPU usage is completely unacceptable. (I haven't checked the GPU usage because I don't know how to.) <br /> <br /> Apparently this is a problem with Chromium? Regardless, fine people at GOG, please fix this because Galaxy is just a burden like this.

On my Surface Book, Gog Galaxy appears to be the cause of the system process taking up ~30% CPU and ridiculous amounts of memory. Especially when downloading or installing a game - Gog's own resources spike, but system spikes with it. Weirdest thing.

Unfortunately Galaxy is based on a custom Chromium framework, it's more lightweight than a Chromium browser or other "apps" that use Chromium, but it suffers the same excessive usage that Chromium has. As I see, there's no solution except wait until Google fixes Chromium. Pro tip: Never. <br />

With Galaxy 1.2.7 it's become an extreme resource hog. Out here in 32 bit retro land, we're restricted to 3GB of RAM. Galaxy is eating over half that before you even attempt to load a game. Add the operating system and things slow to a crawl, making it almost unusable. <br /> The constant CPU usage has been mentioned already - Why is this ? <br /> It's an overlay, a portal, a start page. It should load and that's it. <br /> It should only need activity when loading or saving a game to the cloud, not constantly. <br /> Galaxy is currently using 1.456 GB of my 3 GB RAM & 5% CPU and it's doing NOTHING. <br />

Going back to what Rikkochet posted back at the beginning of the thread... I have three GOG processes consuming a pretty constant 2-3% CPU each. That might not seem like a lot, but there is no reason for GOG to be consuming a measurable amount of CPU while sitting idle. <br /> <br /> I went to the privacy settings and changed the option for "Allow chat messages from" to "nobody". The CPU usage instantly died off, now at 0% for all three processes with the occasional bump to 1%.

While I always support efficiency & simplification, especially in reference to computer processes which don't actually do much (as opposed to major active processes like games or video transcoding), I don't see how 142MB of RAM & 1% CPU usage comes anywhere near being called a virus. 95% CPU? Sure. 50%? Sure. 25%? Definitely high, but... 1%? My Steam client is using 180MB of RAM for the main client & its 1st helper, with the helper's helper using *600MB* of RAM. But you're complaining about 142MB? Skype uses more than that and does less. Discord uses that much. Take your pick, very few software programs which do anything more than open a console window will use less than 142MB of RAM, so I would say it's already very lightweight, especially compared to Steam using over 750MB of RAM! Defense of Galaxy (by showing people how stupid they are) over. <br /> <br /> All that said, Galaxy does still use too much CPU & RAM, and it would be nice if it didn't open 1/2 a dozen processes, though this is less of an issue. My Galaxy client is currently using about 2% CPU (not a *big* deal, but higher than should be for a quad-core i7 with hyperthreading) and 450 MB of RAM. I have RAM to spare, but that's very high for what it should be. Still lower than the Steam client, but really shouldn't be so high.

Gonna have to uninstall it, it currently keeps hogging 30-40% cpu every few seconds. Sort it please or Steam will be the way forward. A shame.

I tried GOG and Galaxy Client but now W/O any GOG games installed anymore, let alone being played, I added up all the instances of Galaxy Client constantly running in my sys's background. It's using up 142mb+ of RAM & 1%+ of CPU usage. Some would call that a virus!

I have same problem. GalaxyClient.exe takes up only 18MB or RAM, while other process the GalaxyClient_Helper.exe runs 3 instances of itself at time and takes up another 100MB of RAM. The CPU usage is thankfully only a 1% at rest on my i7-860.

Just Installed the client and I'm getting all the issues the people below are. <br /> I honestly don't know why it would use so many CPU cycles when Idling. May be the thread management. Limiting how many updates the code performs in one second may work.

I installed the latest version today and there is some improvement. The three instances of GalaxyClient Helper Application are now consuming 176MB and about 4% cpu on average; was at 560MB and 22% CPU before the update. Keep working it down guys... Excel doesn't use that much and it does a whole lot more than your game launcher app...

Even when not running, (not in the taskbar) Galaxy is using over 200Mb of memory, it shows two instances of Galaxy client and one of Galaxy client helper running in Task Manager. Any attempt to shut these down results in them immediately restarting on their own. By contrast my steam client only uses 39-40Mb of memory when not in use and if killed in Task Manager, stays turned off until restarted. This beta version of Galaxy still needs a lot of work.

Yeah holy moly. I just bought a new rig and it was running fine with all my games then i finally got witcher. At first i just used the client for the dlc but when i tried to play a few quests my computer just went crazy like i was running 3 games at once. I played just through the executable for the game and its quiet as a whisper now.

GalaxyClientHelper process uses one entire core at any time. Renders the program unusable for single core or duo core users, unusable for others when playing demanding games

GalaxyClienthelper eating up an inordinate amount of CPU cycles while idling on my PC too (Core i5 3470). This is unacceptable. I heard the cpu fan revving up on account of Galaxy Client idling a number of times. Please fix this bug.

I have a pretty beefy system and just watched GalaxyClientHelper eat 20% CPU for over 5 minutes with zero disk activity. Perhaps it got bored and started to calculate pi to seven million digits. Either way I have stopped letting Galaxy run in the background for now. Pls fix GOG!

It seems to be using 30% CPU constantly, when it has an update available and the "do you want to update?" dialogue is showing in the application itself. <br /> This happens even if the application is minimized to the system tray, but after maximizing and agreeing to update, it will fall back down to around 0% idle usage.

While idle, GOGGalaxyHelper is consuming a very excessive amount of CPU. <br /> Battlenet is having a very similar issue and it turned out to be the embedded chromium browser middleware. I am disabling autostart of the GOG client because of this.

I can confirm that the GalaxyClient has at least one GalaxyClient Helper.exe process out of 3 that is consuming ~0.5GB of RAM and using between 4 and 20% CPU just sitting Idle. Please make it stop.

This is ongoing and has improved during the beta phase and that's what beta is for, Galaxy is a very lite client but will continue to evolve.

Can't quite speak to the CPU or GPU issues mentioned here, but you know it's needing some optimization when the galaxy client and various helper functions use more than twice the memory when idle than Steam does while running a tailer video in their store view. <br /> Also my somewhat ageing desktop experiences slowdowns and choppiness when running with Galaxy in the background while playing Deadly Tower of Monsters, runs smoothly when I don't bother launching Galaxy.

I don't know what you're on about. Galaxy is topping out at 5.3% of my CPU while It's actively checking files (just browsing the store it tops out at 0.5% and uses between 22mb and 45 mb of RAM (depending on what it's doing). All of these numbers are *less* than Steam.

Galaxy uses far too much resources if running idle! <br /> (and still too much if not idle IMHO). <br /> <br /> I recommend to use the following settings: <br /> - uncheck 'Run GOG Galaxy at Windows startup' ! <br /> - uncheck 'receive preview....' <br /> - check 'Quit Galaxy when closing...' ! <br /> On older computers or slow internet, reduce 'Number of concurrent connections' to 2-4 <br />

I've also noticed that Galaxy will use some GPU resources while minimized. Using GPU-Z i ensured to close everything i could ado without. <br /> <br /> All testing on win7 with 16gb RAM, GTX780 and a i7 4770k (nothing OC): <br /> <br /> - Without Galaxy running, 0% load <br /> - Galaxy open and downloading a game, avg of 5% over 5 minutes <br /> - Galaxy running and downloading a game but minimized 3-4% over 5 minutes. <br /> <br /> I did these tests because i was trying to play a game while downloading Witcher 3, but the game i was trying to play was stuttering. Though i'm not sure that the GPU usage is entirely to blame on that one. <br /> <br /> Supreme Commander is pretty CPU intensive too. But i thought it was worth a shot at a mention here.

GOG Galaxy Client helper and GOG use alot of memory and CPU resources when running in background. It even causes the fan on my system to run. It makes me wonder if this is malware rather than a genuine client? Please fix this.

I've noticed the same thing. GalaxyClient Helper is using a constant 2-4% of my CPU, even when I'm not downloading or updating anything. Switching away from a game page (the page with the Play button) brings it back to 0% after a few seconds. <br /> <br /> As a result, I've been launching games, then alt-tabbing out to switch back to the store view in the Galaxy client.

I see it taking 2-3% CPU just sitting in the background as well. I've started not letting it run all the time, it's the single highest usage app when my system is just sitting idle by far.

I have Core i3-530 (5 years old system) with 12GB RAM, Win7 64bit, and "GalaxyClient Helper.exe" is taking about 5% of CPU according to TaskManager. But those 5% are actually relative to 4 virtual cores (my CPU have 2 physical hyperthreaded cores). 5% virtual is 20% when translated to single threaded performance. Which is a lot for nothing!

GalaxyClient Helper.exe uses a constant 3-5% of my CPU when sitting on the game view (the one with the "Play" button). Usage drops to zero when minimizing the window. The problem is that when I press "Play" the window is in the background of the game, non-minimized, which means it still uses 3-5% which could have been used by a game instead.

It still uses too much CPU and RAM while staying in the background. I even get major performance drops INGAME. Good to see it is already "in progress". A client must run silent and unremarkable, that's what a client is all about.

I don't mind memory usage as a cache while downloading and extracting. You should use what's there for the highest efficiency possible. I'm not always on a high-speed internet connection, thus I think compression is a good thing. (Also for backing-up the installers.) <br /> <br /> I do mind cpu and memory usage when I'm not using the client. <br /> While Galaxy is loaded in the background, it should use the least amount of resources possible. <br /> But for some reason the Client and Helper Application are always using the CPU.

Definitely a must. I suspect that some of my other apps are slowed down so much because GOG Galaxy takes up so much of my CPU power. It's a great app, but needs a lot of work on the amount of power it takes up. +1.
