Warcraft I & II Bundle

Crazy pricing

These are OK games but the price is way unreasonable - the two of these together shouldn't be more than $4 or $5. Definitely not worth the ridiculous price GOG slapped on these.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

Not as good as its base story

I loved the original short story of the same name that served as the basis for this game ever since I first read it and I was trying to find this game for a long time. I got it a while back (and then on GOG, too) because online reviews raved about how groundbreaking and excellent a game it was. Unfortunately, it was more of a letdown. Technically, the game was OK - I haven't encountered the bugs other reviews mentioned but it's a pretty standard point-and-click adventure game: the graphics, the music / sound effects are all OK - not bad but nothing special. The characters have some pretty crazy background story that I thought didn't really fit the original short story and I found the resulting experience mostly confusing and not very engaging. The puzzles are (with some exceptions) illogical and frustrating - I have a hard time seeing how anyone could get through this game without a walkthrough or just randomly clicking everything. Getting through this felt more like a chore, not playing. I definitely recommend reading the story - it's good dark sci-fi and it's much better than the game.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

Decent effort

I don't know how the game was when it came out; I only got it just recently. I loved the original Baldur's Gate and played it several times and initially I avoided the Enhanced Edition (EE) like the plague because of the controversy around it. Having played it now (several years after its release) I can say that the game in its current form is pretty good and enjoyable. I didn't notice much in the story / character interactions related to the EE (which is a good thing) and the things I did notice were either welcome changes or I considered them neutral. The local multiplayer is pretty unstable, I had multiple crashes but otherwise the game is good, I'd recommend it. I removed 1 star for the frequent crashes.

Quake 4

Boring, uninspired sequal to Quake 2

I liked Quake 2 a lot and I was looking forward to giving Quake 4 a try (I didn't play it when it came out, only now, in 2021). The good: it didn't crash and it ran well on a high-end computer. The bad: the story is uninspired and feels like a clone of Quake 2. I liked it there but here the maps are just convoluted mazes set up to railroad the player from one ambush to another. The lighting/shadows are awful - there are literally pitch black areas right next to row of bright ceiling lights. The ambient light setting is a joke, I'm not sure why it was put in. The guns are near-unusable - only the two weakest guns have lights (which is needed all the time, see above) and the others have delays so when an enemy shows up, it's not possible to fire at them right away. All the weapons are under-powered and some enemies take a ridiculous number of hits even on the easiest level. I used to be decent in Quake 2 and 3 but in this game I died constantly, even on the easiest setting. Quake was always an arcade shooter but for some mind-boggling reason, they added reloading in this version, trying to make it a tactical shooter? It doesn't work - if I want to play a tactical shooter game, I'd play Arma 1/2/3, not this laughable effort. Textures look pretty generic and low-quality (even with the manual config changes to fix texture quality) and the same textures are reused everywhere. I could've sworn Quake 2 had better variety. Definitely not recommended, even with a heavy discount. I don't think this game is worth anything more than $1.
