Hands of Necromancy

Hexen by another name

This game plays a lot like Hexen with lots of puzzles and hub level system but can long and tedious and repetitive at times also just like Hexen. Play slowly, take your time and pause for days or weeks between plays. Is gonna help make it less repetitive. I find when I come back feels a bit fresh again and I have to remember what I was doing and works well with Hexen type games for me. I think overall the design or game is quite interesting. The powerups are unique. Weapons are unique as well. Monster design quite interesting. Level design also pretty cool. All weapons are usefull and you begin with 2 weapons. For me the game monster/weapon/texture design feels a bit more like Heretic than Hexen a mishmash of different things put together but the level design is deffinitely Hexen.

Deep Sky Derelicts

Fun but repetitive

This game is quite fun at first but gets boring fast. Not sure why perhaps the repetitive nature of the game. Seems a very front loaded game. You get to experience everything in the first couple of days then you've seen everything. The style is very fun and appealing. I think even the atmosphere is good. The story is okay not that interesting to be honest. I think the game could be saved by adding more unique locations and enemies instead of the same old gray boring ship with the same old gray boring enemies and doing the same old boring motions. And adding more strategy. For example imagine a mining colony ship with silicon based life forms which are weak against ice weapons but immune to fire/laser. Or imagine a swamp/farming colony ship overrun with poison barb spitting plants that are immune to poison/acid but weak against laser/fire. This would require you to strategize a bit more. Would also be interesting to have more alien/unique player classes. As it stands the game is really a glorified clicker and you mainly depend on RNG gods to help you.

The Original Strife: Veteran Edition

Great game..Takes a bit to get into

I just finished this. Unique story and fun gameplay and great atmosphere but takes a bit of getting used to. Esentially this is a Doom type game adapted into a narrative driven light-weight RPG. Doom engine/ui doesn't quite fit that type of game so feels a bit awkward at times but for me personally I thought it was great. I grew up with older DOS era 486 games and I love classic fps/rpgs and for me was quite fun. - Takes a bit to get into it at first due to the dated design. The ui/inventory doesn't quite fit the RPG style since is really a Doom game forced to an RPG but the story is quite good. - First location takes a while to figure out if you haven't played the game before you might be stuck in some areas. + Great story and atmosphere. Blends cyberpunk, post apocalyptic and medieval/fantasy genres perfectly. + Map design is great with lots of puzzles and fun secrets to discover. Is like Hexen but more streamlined and locations make more sense. For example you have neutral towns populated with NPCs making the world feel more alive. - Some locations are quite difficult. For me I got stuck in the sewers for a long time then gave up for a few months until I figured out a solution from a YouTube lets play. + Has an automap and the re-design also features some points of interest markers which can help you figure out where to go next. A bit of handholding. + Enemies are very unique. Some can only be killed in specific ways. They do have even a few neutral NPCs that populate the world. + The game is long and it would probably take maybe around 1-2 week(s) to finish for new players. - Weapon design is okay. I find myself using mainly machine gun and rocket launcher. The crossbow is completely worthless for the most part after you get machine gun. The grenade launcher is too unpredictable. There is a secret weapon but I never got to unlock it. I wish they had better weapon design.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition

New graphics for an already amazing game

System Shock borrows a lot from Ultima Underworld but simplifies the RPG such that there's no NPCs. Everything is in form of audio or video disk recordings or notes you find which provide clues. You're on your own against a horde of hostiles and your job is to ...well you will see. The engine has been overhauled adding a lot of modernized controls and functionality and better graphics. Highly recommended!

Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse

A D&D setting with minimal D&D

Al Qadim "The Old" is Arabian Nights Forgotten Realms D&D setting. This game was published by SSI which made a huge amount of video board game adaptations back in the 90s. This is a very lightweight adaptation with very minimal roleplaying involved. It reminds me more of an action-adventure game. The character generation is heavily simplified. You gain experience by solving quests and you can improve your sword attacks. This game could have been like Dark Sun another SSI title but they decided on a more fun action packed adventure over minmaxing. The story and the gameplay is super fun! If you're into action rpgs or sidescrolling games you gonna love this one. Even if you're into hardcore rpgs you might find this a nice break from the grind. But make no mistake is not an easy game. I believe this version of the game is a re-release with some additional support.

Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

Doom with fantasy texture pack

The gameplay is pretty much Doom in a fantasy setting. The weapons feel like re-textured Doom weapons. Monsters are slightly more unique but maps are boring. Heretic does add activated items (artifacts) which make for even more fun gameplay over Doom. If you enjoyed playing Doom you gonna enjoy playing Heretic.
