Great game. One of the most awesome I've purchased this year. Some technical details: Runs via wine in linux out of the box, but at fps slightly lower than comfortable. Requires Windows Media Codec to run (windows 7 N users have to install it themselves) even if you don't have any mp3 or wma encoded music, it still requires WMC.
I'm a rather casual adventure games player (as opposed to less... puzzle-heavy game genres), so I can't possibly judge the puzzle part. I can only tell that the tip system worked well for me and that you won't have to look for the walkthrough online if you are not that big fan of a genre either. But the plot is where the game really shines. And I've seen a couple of complains about plot holes, but guys, seriously. This is another 'Back to the Future' plot, it's basically made out of plot holes! Who cares? It's hilarious, fun and exciting! The only thing I didn't like about the game is this cartoonish style to it, but I guess it did let the developers focus less on graphics and more on story, so I'm fine.
Well, I've just completed the story mode and I really don't know how to put it. First things first: the first game was more about plot than gameplay. This one is quite contrary: gameplay is seamless and really good, but the plot... well, let's say it's a story in a different genre. But not a bad one, that's for sure: still well-told, with all those fragments in manuscripts, great voiceovers and live acting. Speaking of live acting. This game is a great example that a feature long forgotten (does any of you still remember those interactive movie games?) can be re-implemented in a new shiny way. Presented as an episode of the "Night Springs" TV show it is a very cinematic experience indeed. Now about the story itself... Well, it was a bold move to present it that way. It may seem boring and repetitive, but it was a bold move nevertheless. And the characters... Well, let's be honest, the antagonist is quite awesome. Speaking of gameplay... Well, I really didn't like all that 'fight with light' idea in the first game. The controls were just too clumsy and the motion blur while creating one of the greatest immersion effects was a real pain, especially at high difficulty. This game on the other hand... well, I wasn't interested in the 'arcade mode', but after playing the game, I'd say I'll give it a try. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this game to everyone who likes great stories and fun gameplay. Though this game may seem quite boring, I can't imagine a better way to present that kind of story without some repetitiveness. Just don't expect 'American Nightmare' to be a proper sequel to the first game. It is not. (Due to the last statement I expect a lot of negative reviews from those who expected it to be.)
