I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

Not for kids

Seriously. Yes there are some graphics violence and disturbing pictures, but the worse is the theme and script in this game. They are superb for its time and very adult in nature. A more or less classic point and click adventure game in a sci fi setting. You are among the last people in the world and you are being mind....tortured by an intelligence which you might as well call the ultimate evil remaining. Or is it? An easy to play but hard to master game with tough puzzles and not for those who don't have experience in hard adventure games. Unless of course you really want, who am I to stop you?

Soulbringer

Not working

Under Vista 64 with a Radeon 6850. No matter what I tried, the game just won't load. Sure it took just some play with compatibility options to make the initial setup run, but the game itself, no. It just doesn't feel like it. And I am not the only one experiencing this. If the game runs for you, great, but as it doesn't run for me, how can I give it any good rating? Shame.

Wargame: European Escalation

A thinking gamer's RTS

One of the few out there. For me this game is for the modern RTS what Homeworld was for the RTS of its time. The more you play the game the more you unlock units you can buy during a battle set up. Then you take those units on a battle (usually online) and fight over objectives. The game is relatively realistic for an RTS, don't expect to see a tank withstanding 10 missiles or something. There is fog of war in the battles and limited supplies/reinforcements. The single player part of the game is good and fun, but (and I usually hate people who say this for games) it is there mostly to help you unlock units and train for the major part of the game, the online battles. There is some tier/match up online, but of course nothing is perfect. The game is well worth the price if you like RTS. The most recent RTS which was slightly similar was World in Conflict, but even that was slightly more "arcadey" than this one. The game is tough but fair. If you only plan on playing it single player it is worth this reduced price 100%. If you also want the online part, it's more like 200%. Very good game.

Galactic Civilizations I: Ultimate Edition

Very good 4X game

The best part of this 4X in space game is IMO the AI. It has yet to be toppled especially for diplomacy. The AI can have plans, work behind your back, pretend to be your friend, or actually be your best ally. Now, as for the game in general, it follows most of the 4X rules, you pick your race, including humans, or you customize your own if you so desire. Then try to expand in the galaxy, first peaceful through colonizing, then through fighting. You have to constantly research new technologies, or find new ones through various "loot chests" (similar to the barbarian huts in the Civilization series). Diplomacy as mentioned before is very well done, and in general you feel like you are playing against these alien races and not just some stupid AI. For me, this game is a better experience than its sequel, which of course has some other advantages like larger galaxies etc. It remains simple to play but complicated under the hood. It's fan and it is close to the Civ games. I am not going to say it is the best 4X game out there, but depending on someone's tastes, it could easily be the best. If you like 4X games, it's a no brainer that you buy it. I know I will even though I already have it from other sources. It's from a time when Stardock actually made good games instead of....nvm.

Strike Commander

Good mix

One portion of flight sim, one portion of arcade flying, one portion of Privateer, two portions of Area 88 , one fantastic recipe for a 90's classic. Don't miss it.

Conquest: Frontier Wars

A working space based RTS

If you have played Star Trek Armada, you will find yourself at home with this. Only this time you get a fully working bug less game. Where in other RTS games you have one map, here you can have several at once, that they connect through portals (which can be guarded, mined etc). You build your baseS in orbit of planets on each map/sector. There can be several of them on each sector. From there you can construct a variety of ships which in terminology and tactics remind more of WWII naval warfare than Star Trek Armada ever did. You have your battleships, gunboats, fighters, carriers, etc and that is just for the Terrans. The other races have some nasty surprises for you too. :) There is a good storyline, well, I enjoyed it. There is skirmish mode. Units and gameplay in general is well balanced and designed. The graphics and movement of ships are in 3D, but like ST:A you only have to deal with movement on the 2D/flat plane as other "Earth" based RTS games. For resources you mostly have to use your mining bases and transport ships. You can perform research on different orbital stations you built, which allow lots of goodies... It's one of the best RTS games ever, and I am not sure if there is any other as good space based RTS yet, apart perhaps from HW1+2. If you are an RTS junkie and you somehow missed this one, GET IT. Seriously, stop reading and buy it. What are you still doing here? Stop reading I said! Click buy! Have fun!

Leisure Suit Larry

My favourite adventure series

The very first one I played in 87 on my ST, on a monochrome monitor. I fell in love. You are an adult who is very unlucky in his romantic life. You have an idea about it, but not the level. You also think that that is the only reason you don't get women. The truth is, you are too corny, too rude and not much to look at. Being broke doesn't help either, nor does poor taste in clothing. Your mission is, get laid. That's it. If you happen to find the love of your life, great, but it is not going to be an easy task. What is going to be though is fun. A series which require a more mature audience, not so much for the violence (there is some), sex (there is some), but for the theme, humor in it. If you also happen to be at least a bit unlucky with women, it gets even more funny. I can't recommend the series enough, but a warning. They are not easy, they require thinking, trying different things, and exploring. SAVE OFTEN! Your character can and will die. This is a Sierra game, it's not fair. But it is rewarding, Obviously with a touch of subjectiveness (my word), I have to give it 5/5.

Bioforge

A blast from the 90's.

When this game was released on the PC, it was in a way groundbreaking. The graphics were what set this game apart from any other, together with the action adventure style you just couldn't find those days. The game had bugs and it was very difficult to run even to something as close as Windows 95. For some it did, for others it didn't. It's a sci fi adventure in action form, plenty of searching and fighting. The graphics were at the time just to die for, although as with most games of the mid to late 90's, they were quickly surpassed by newer technologies. I can't give an honest recollection of how really good the game is, but in my opinion it is worth collecting alone for it's place in the history of gaming, even if this isn't your favourite type of game.

Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology

Impressive RTS

If you are fanatic about the way the first Blitzkrieg game plays, then you might not love this sequel. There are some differences between them, with B2 having a more streamlined design, a greater focus on being a RTS than a tactical sim. Not that the game is THAT different to not be able to figure out which game's sequel it is. :p It is very difficult, you need to use strategy and tactics, you need to think of your long time plan since you get to upgrade your "units" in a similar way to..well, Panzer General 3D mostly, but not exactly. Reinforcements are of a less of an issue than in the previous game, but it never reaches the point where you simply don't care/worry about them. Especially in the long run of a campaign... This is not a C&C type of RTS, you can't just drag a box around all your tanks and charge forward. You will pay for it dearly. Enemy scout units, snipers, machinegun nests, anti tank traps and units, are all ready to ruin your day. The game is a very solid good RTS game with more emphasis on tactics than other RTS games, but still a bit easier than the first game. The graphics are in 3D this time, which depending on the gamer is better or worse. I found them very good at the time and never a negative issue. The sound is as solid as ever. I recommend this game to anyone wanting to play a very good RTS game but want a bit more challenge than "rush tactics win" RTS games.

Carmageddon Max Pack

Not my favourite, but

that doesn't mean the game isn't great. It's probably one of the best top 10 driving games of the 90's. I wasn't a fan since I preferred clean racing and not violence in them. This game has violence. To be more accurate, there is a good driving game in this violence pack. The game was one of the handful and of driving games which let you free to explore. The only other two of the 80's and 90's I can remember now were Highway Patrol II and Hard Drivin' . This one was definitely a better driving experience. To win events you need to either exterminate all the civilians, or all the other drivers, or complete the set number of laps, first. None of them is easy, all of them are fun, with the least fun being the clean race effort. Your (upgradable) car can be repaired while inside the race, quickly, as long as it isn't destroyed, but for that you need money. Money you get...I am sure you will figure out how. :) The destruction and mayhem in this game hasn't been seen elsewhere in a driving game. Not even GTA series has this. Have you seen the movie Deathrace 2000? (not the boring recent remake). It's very similar. Kill kill kill, destroy destroy destroy, win win win. I mean, it sounds boring, doesn't it? Why are you still reading this? Buy the game already!
