Game is beautiful, fleshed out, mechanically deep, and story driven. Just turn off the kingdom management thing, trust me. I thought to myself I love CRPGs I want to love the kingdom management stuff... waste of time. But go ahead, try it and then you will remember what I said... Just turn it off. Everything else is amazing.
I like it. I like the theme, the enemies, the strategy, its like Xcom but with many squads. Good game.
This game is absolutely fantastic. Strategy and tactics are top notch, customization is wonderful, game and sound design are amazing. If you enjoy games like XCOM, this one is definetly for you. Retro graphics, addictive, deep, complex, and true to the WH40K experience. Ultramarines, FOR THE EMPEROR!
Extremely low production values. Hardcore RPG mechanics. Turn based, tactical, story driven. Lots of reading. If that does not scare you, buy it and play it. Buy and play everything Spiderweb. If you a hardcore strategy turnbased rpg nut, this one is for you.
This game is a blend of Valkyria Chronicles, XCOM, and Warhammer Fantasy setting but cranked up to Hardcore extreme. It includes great tactical combat, awesome customization, permanent consequences, plenty of choice and management dilemmas. "Do I rest my wounded leader and lose 2 days of resourece gathering or do I hire a rookie leader while gold is scarce and risk it all to keep my warpstone shipments consistent?". You really develop a closeness to your top warriors and sweat bullets whenever they are downed by the enemy. When vampires showed up? I was actually kind of scared. Yes it is hard, obscure, systematic, and complex. It is not for everyone for sure. Just for the Hardcore RPG strategy and tactical nuts like me. (xcom in third person with swords and magic? yep, sign me up)
Look I love games like Baldurs Gate, XCOM, Dragons Age Origins, Pool of Radiance, and other classics. This game is a mixture of the former. Graphics? who cares. This is a niche game, a refined acquired taste. (I actually preferred the original Avernum's graphics except for the character art, I miss sleeping at inns and the obscurity, but still.) I even turn the music off. It's about the writing, the world building, the open endedness, the role playing. The game is top tier where it counts. This is not for everyone and that is the best thing about it. I love it. (100+ hours in, cant wait to play every game in the SpiderWeb catalogue.)
One of the best RPG's I have ever played. If you love D&D, this is it.
Its silly, its clunky... it's a lot of fun! Nostalgia may be talking here, but I spent countless hours playing this with my brother when I was a kid and I would recommend it. Hidden Gem!
